As a gamer with a soft spot for movies, I must say that Emilia Pérez’s journey from the silver screen to the Golden Globes has been nothing short of extraordinary! It’s not every day you witness a film breaking records and making history. The fact that it’s based on such an inspiring story, about embracing one’s true self, makes it all the more captivating.
This morning, Emilia Pérez achieved an exceptional feat as her Netflix film garnered a historic ten nominations for the Golden Globes. This sets a new record for the most nominated comedy or musical film in the awards show’s history, surpassing last year’s ‘Barbie’ and the 1972 film ‘Cabaret’, both of which received nine nominations each. The all-time record holder is still the 1975 film ‘Nashville’, which competed in the drama category.
Emilia Pérez, charmed the crowds at Cannes, and Netflix quickly secured the feature following its premiere at the May festival. The film revolves around cartel leader Emilia (played by Karla Sofía Gascón), who enlists lawyer Rita (portrayed by Zoe Saldaña) in a scheme to stage her death, allowing her to undergo a gender transition and live authentically as herself.
The characteristic earned nominations for the Golden Globe Awards in both categories: Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), and Best Picture (Non-English Language).
Additionally, it earned acting nominations for Gascón in the category of Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Musical or Comedy, along with Selena Gomez and Saldaña, who were both recognized for their performances in the category of Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in any film.
Film director Jacques Audiard received nominations in the categories of Best Director (Motion Picture) and Best Screenplay (Motion Picture).
Clement Ducol and Camille received recognition not only for their overall score but also for their popular tracks “El Mal” and “Mi Camino.
As far as victories go, Barbie secured six in the previous year, while Cabaret bagged seven. Nashville, known as the most nominated film ever, was awarded only once, for best original song. The outcome of Emilia Pérez’s competition will be disclosed on January 5th, when the awards ceremony broadcasts on CBS.
