‘Emily in Paris’ Boss Darren Star on What’s Next for Emily’s Romance in Season 4

As a dedicated fan of Emily in Paris, I must say that Darren Star has once again outdone himself with this delightful series. The character development and plot twists are nothing short of extraordinary, especially when it comes to the enigmatic Camille (Lily Collins).

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to say that Emily in Paris finally delivered on the anticipation built since its debut in 2020 with the long-awaited episode we’ve all been eagerly waiting for!

Emily (Lily Collins) and Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) together.

For the past three seasons, there’s been an ongoing will-they-won’t-they dynamic between the characters, reaching its peak at the end of the first half of season four (split into two releases). In this moment, Gabriel and Emily finally confess their feelings for each other, a revelation that’s long overdue. However, when Camille (played by Camille Razat) announces her pregnancy, it complicates their prospects for a future together once more.

The initial five episodes of the fourth season continued directly from where the last one ended, showing Emily and Alfie (played by Lucien Laviscount) having split up, while Gabriel and Camille remained committed to co-parenting even though they were no longer together. Later on, Camille rekindled her relationship with her Greek partner, Sofia (Melia Kreiling), resulting in a complicated situation involving Emily, Gabriel, Camille, and Sofia – almost like a square of relationships.

As Camille’s romantic chapter with Gabriel has officially closed, it opens up a new opportunity for me, the character, to explore my relationship with my now-boyfriend. This development has been eagerly awaited by fans since the series began, and they’re thrilled to see us finally give our bond a shot. But, just like any other story, ours might not always be smooth sailing throughout the season ahead.

In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Darren Star, the mastermind behind Emily in Paris, hints at some bumps in the road for our beloved characters. “The journey of love is seldom straightforward,” he says. “There will be unforeseen hurdles, yet what’s more, I believe as they delve deeper into each other, they start to perceive one another beyond fantasies. The phase of infatuation has passed, and it’s now about being more grounded in reality about who they truly are.”

In the interview below, the showrunner discusses various aspects of the series, including Sylvie’s (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) experience with the #MeToo movement, Gabriel’s excitement about not receiving his Michelin star, the role Camille’s false pregnancy will play in the upcoming final five episodes, and other intriguing details.

How did you decide where to cut Part 1 and begin Part 2?

Initially, I had a clear idea of how the story would unfold. However, when Netflix requested to split the season into two parts, I started pondering, “Alright, what can I do to craft an engaging mid-season finale that feels like a full season conclusion?” As a result, I intentionally steered all plotlines towards a climax by the end of episode five. In essence, this creative challenge provided me with a clear compass, guiding where we were headed and how all the storylines would collide and reach their peak intensity.

At last, we see Emily (played by Lily Collins) and Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) revealing a genuine connection between them. What prompted this deepening of their relationship at this particular moment?

We’ve been holding out for quite some time now. I can feel that our patience is about to run dry. Making this decision wasn’t easy for Emily, given all she had to consider. Yet, I am thrilled at the prospect of providing Gabriel and Emily with a chance to experience, cherish, and live the romantic journey they’ve yearned for, together. And they will indeed get to do so.

Although I’m delighted to witness their union, there’s a sense of apprehension within me, like anticipating when the other shoe might fall. Could you perhaps provide some insight on this feeling?

Give it some time. Love rarely follows a straight path; there may be unexpected hurdles along the way. However, I believe what’s more important is that as they grow deeper in their relationship, they will see each other less as idealized figures and more for who they truly are. This phase marks the end of infatuation, and the beginning of a more realistic understanding of one another. Essentially, they are transitioning from the romantic fantasy stage to the reality of their relationship. This doesn’t mean their love will fade; instead, they must face the truth about themselves.

It was quite intriguing for Julien, also known as Samuel Arnold, to step away from Agence Grateau momentarily. What’s the point of moving forward in his story only to return to the beginning again?

As a fan, I can empathize with the character’s feelings when Emily entered the scene and seemed to overshadow him somewhat, encroaching upon his moment. He felt that she was, perhaps unknowingly, showing disrespect towards him due to his seniority. However, Emily is quite vocal and tends to overstep boundaries, particularly with Julien. The character felt compelled to assert himself and defend his own worth. Given the circumstances, it might not have been the ideal time, but I believe it was crucial for him to break free, so to speak, and demonstrate his own significance to himself.

In the storyline, Sylvie, portrayed by Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, plays a role that could involve either supporting or initiating a #MeToo movement linked to Louis de Leon, played by Pierre Deny. Let’s delve into how this unfolds in the narrative.

In season three, they delved into topics hinted at during their lunch together, and she mentioned this specific incident between them, stating her willingness to overlook it if he cooperated with her to some extent. However, in season four, certain events made Sylvie understand that this wasn’t just a past issue but an ongoing one. This realization gave her the chance to voice her concerns. I believe she struggled with this decision somewhat, as she is not a character who welcomes vulnerability and yet finds herself in such a position. This dilemma appears to take a toll on both her personal and professional life. But it’s important to note that this situation wasn’t conceived solely for the current season; it was a plot point that had been planned since the last one, with more details about it being revealed this season.

In the first part, Marianne (Laurence Gormezano) had a more significant role compared to previous seasons. What’s the reason for this increased prominence in the current storyline?

I genuinely adore that character! You’re the one who’s mentioned her first, and let me tell you, she cracks me up! The entire storyline just had me giggling non-stop. Bruno Gouery really adds depth to his role with her presence. It’s been a constant thought of mine how their story would unfold, especially since the restaurant is such a significant part of Gabriel’s life and continues to be so.

It caught me off guard that Gabriel seemed overjoyed rather than disappointed about not receiving a Michelin star. Most people thought he’d be upset, but instead, he’s hosting a celebration. So, how on earth did this unexpected reaction occur?

After putting in so much effort towards earning validation, he found that when the stress subsided, he didn’t require it for happiness or self-definition. He discovered that he had accumulated quite a bit and no longer needed the disliked pastry chef role. He no longer felt compelled to go through all those hurdles. He came to understand that he already possessed everything he desired and the Michelin star was no longer necessary for validation. It held less significance for him suddenly.

One of the major surprises from the first part is that Camille isn’t genuinely expecting a baby. Can you hint at how this revelation might impact or unfold in the next segment?

The events will unfold, and I find them quite surprising, much like the character herself. I believe she finds herself in a position where she never intended to mislead anyone, and she’s deeply affected by it. Consequently, these developments have a significant impact on everyone’s relationships in part two.

Camille and Sofia’s (Melia Kreiling) relationship ended as a result of the pregnancy. Will there be a chance that she might reappear in Part 2?

I don’t know. You have to see part two. (Laughs.)

Fans had high expectations that Kim Cattrall’s character from Sex and the City, Samantha Jones, might make an appearance in Emily in Paris following her attendance at the show’s premiere.

It’s unlikely that Samantha Jones from a different series will appear in “Emily in Paris.” A crossover like this might be challenging, but I’d certainly enjoy seeing Kim Cattrall on the show. She’s an actress I admire deeply, and it would be fantastic to see her take on a new role. It’s not about reprising Samantha Jones; she’s versatile enough to play various characters.

I mean, she’s in London. It’s not that far from Paris…

I know. Believe me, I wish it could happen. Call HBO for me.

As a dedicated gamer, I find myself pondering this question: Since Emily in Paris hasn’t been greenlit for a fifth season just yet, how long do you envision yourself crafting the lives of these intriguing characters?

Let’s find out how long we’ll be kept, as I struggle to part ways with captivating characters in a fantastic series. To me, they’re like old friends who take you on incredible journeys. For instance, consider “Sex and the City,” created by Star – it’s been 25 years, yet it continues to resonate.

Currently, you can watch the first part of Emily in Paris’ fourth season on Netflix. The second part will be available on Netflix starting September 12th.
