As a child of the millennium who grew up with Hot Topic as my second home, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the upcoming Emily the Strange feature film! The enigmatic goth icon has been an integral part of my youth, and to see her finally making her way to the big screen is a dream come true.

Legendary character Emily the Strange is set to star in her own movie, thanks to the efforts of producer J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot. Originally created by Rob Reger and debuting on skater Ross Goodman’s skateboard in 1991, Emily became a household name with the publication of the first graphic novel in 2001. This sparked a merchandising phenomenon that encompassed additional graphic novels, a popular clothing line, and various other items showcasing Emily and her four black cats. If you were a youngster hanging around Hot Topic stores during the 2000s to early 2010s, you probably remember Emily the Strange.

According to reports from The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. Animation is teaming up with J.J. Abrams’ production company Bad Robot to create a feature-length movie about the character Emily the Strange. The screenplay for this film will be penned by Pamela Ribon, who has previously worked on projects like ‘Smurfs: The Lost Village’, ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’, and was even nominated for an Academy Award for her animated short film ‘My Year of Dicks’. Additionally, she collaborated on the script for the animated movie ‘Nimona’, which, similar to Emily the Strange, is based on a successful graphic novel.

Ribon expressed thoughts on the movie, stating that animation is an ideal format for showcasing Emily’s eccentric and imaginative creations and escapades. I’ve consistently admired Emily’s daring, boundary-pushing approach and aesthetic. Frankly, nobody else is as cool with brains and bangs! This production promises to be a blast.

Warner Bros. Pictures shared on Instagram a video unveiling their project, which is an upcoming Emily the Strange movie. Bill Damaschke, President of Warner Bros. Animation, expressed his excitement by stating, “Emily is a timeless symbol of individuality and strength, and Pamela Ribon’s voice resonates strongly with this character. It’s an immense privilege for us at Warner Bros. Pictures Animation to collaborate with Bad Robot, Rob [Reger] and Trevor [Duke-Moretz] in bringing Emily the Strange to the silver screen.” In response to the announcement, the creator of Emily the Strange, Rob Reger, issued a statement saying:

Our movie teams, both creative and executive, are simply outstanding. Each member brings a sharp insight and appreciation for Emily the Strange’s unique bond with our everyday world. By embracing the odd and unusual, Emily helps those who feel out of place find comfort. In essence, it feels like we’re turning Emily’s most vivid dreams into reality, which is both thrilling and somewhat terrifying.

Emily the Strange’s Long Journey to the Big Screen

A new attempt to create a movie based on the character “Emily the Strange” is not a novelty. As early as 2005, when the popularity of Emily was growing, Fox Animation started working on a hybrid live-action/animation adaptation. Later in 2010, Universal Pictures obtained the film rights with Chloë Grace Moretz slated to portray Emily. However, it appears that this project has been stuck in development limbo for some time now. In 2016, there were reports that Amazon was considering developing an animated “Emily the Strange” film. Each proposed adaptation has always envisioned Emily and her world as an animated project. Here’s hoping that this Warner Bros. endeavor will finally see the light of day.

It’s intriguing to note that among the projects birthed from the 2019 deal between Warner Bros. and Bad Robot, Emily the Strange seems to be one of the rare exceptions. Over the past five years since the agreement was signed, there have been relatively few projects that have come to fruition. Originally, J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot were working on several titles featuring supernatural DC characters such as Zatanna, Madame Xanadu, and Constantine. However, these plans were abandoned following the appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran as heads of DC Studios. Alongside Hot Wheels, Emily the Strange is now one of the select Bad Robot ventures at Warner Bros. that has managed to move forward.

A specific launch date for “Emily the Strange” hasn’t been announced yet, but considering the amount of time required to produce an animated film, it may take anywhere between three to four years. Consequently, fans might have to wait until at least 2027 before they can enjoy Emily again.
