This year, one fewer contender was nominated in the Emmy Awards category for best talk series compared to previous years. However, among those nominated are established veterans who have often been in the running for this award.
In September’s Primetime Emmy ceremony, The Daily Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and The Late Show With Stephen Colbert will face off to win the award they were all contenders for in 2024. There was some anticipation that Hot Ones might break new ground by becoming the first YouTube series to be nominated, but the Television Academy instead opted for three long-standing nominees.
For 14 successive years, Jimmy Kimmel’s show, ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, has been nominated for the best talk series award (or its previous categories). The “Late Show” on CBS has been winning for nine straight years, and Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” holds 13 victories in this category, taking the prize for the last two years.
The reduced field for the top talk series this year – it’s shrunk from four nominees last year and five in 2023 – is because fewer shows were submitted for consideration. Just 13 shows were submitted, one less than required to have four nominees. This also indicates a drop in the number of late-night shows on both broadcast and cable networks over recent years.
This year’s nominations excluded NBC’s “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” which had been nominated in 2024, due to a smaller pool of entries. Competing shows included “Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney” on Netflix, “Hart to Heart” on Peacock, “Have I Got News for You” on CNN, “Hot Ones,” “Midnight Snack With Julie Chan” on Asian American Movies (a streaming service), “Real Time With Bill Maher” on HBO, “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on NBC again, “Very Important People” on Dropout, and “Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen” on Bravo.
