Emmys Hosts Eugene and Dan Levy Bring Gentle Mocking to Opening Monologue

As a long-time television enthusiast and a fan of heartfelt humor, I must say that the 2024 Emmy Awards hosted by Eugene and Dan Levy were a delightful treat. Their gentle approach to comedy was refreshing and perfectly encapsulated the spirit of camaraderie among industry professionals. The father-son duo skillfully balanced poking fun at themselves, the awards, and various shows without resorting to harsh criticisms or mockery of individuals present in the room.

At the 2024 Emmy Awards, hosts Eugene and Dan Levy delivered on their promise of a more soft-spoken humorous approach.

The two-man team from the show “Schitt’s Creek,” father and son, started off with a charming and classic monologue, taking gentle jabs at themselves, the Emmys, and several other shows. However, they refrained from making fun of any specific individuals present in the audience.

Here are some of the highlights:

Dan Levy quipped about the Emmys, often referred to as the grand evening for awarding film actors from streaming platforms in the broadcast TV world,” (or)

Last weekend saw the hosting of the Creative Arts Emmys. Remarkably, the series ‘Shogun’ amassed 14 Emmys, making it the most honored show in a single season, and rightfully so, as Dan Levy noted. “The level of craftsmanship on that show,” he said, “I hear their scripts were originally written in Japanese, reworked, then translated back into English subtitles – ones you might have missed while being engrossed in Sabrina Carpenter’s hot wing-eating escapades on your phone.

Eugene Levy announced that ‘The Bear’ has been nominated for an impressive 23 Emmys tonight, making it the most-nominated comedy series ever. He acknowledged that some might wonder if ‘The Bear’ truly qualifies as a comedy, but in keeping with the show’s character, he chose not to make any jokes about this.

Eugene Levy expressed his pride in his streaming service, AppleTV+, which strongly supports the LGBTQ community. However, his son quickly interjected, ‘Dad, that’s not what the ‘plus’ represents.’

As things seem to be going smoothly tonight, you should know that I’m often referred to as ‘Leh-vy’, not the common mispronunciation of ‘Lee-vy’. However, should the evening take a turn for the worse, then feel free to call me by my backup name, Martin Short.

“Little bit of Emmy history here, the very first Emmys’ host in 1949 was Walter O’Keefe,” Eugene Levy said, and Dan Levy followed that with: “That’s true, and tonight we are making Emmy history as the very first father-son pair to mention Walter O’Keefe since 1949.”

The father-son duo previously said they want to take a “gentler approach” to their hosting gig.

The festivities are airing live on ABC from L.A.’s Peacock Theater.

Eugene expressed gratitude towards television during a recent interview when asked about hosting the event. He acknowledged that the nominees deserve recognition, but he also highlighted television as the platform that launched both his and others’ careers. It’s important to him not to make jokes at the expense of those who are nominated, as they have worked hard for this moment, and it is truly their night. He emphasized that respect for the awards show itself is crucial, or else, one might question why they are there in the first place.
