The documentary titled “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story“, created by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, which is a Peabody Award-nominated portrayal of the beloved actor who played Superman, has been submitted for consideration in the Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking Emmy category. This information was reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Documentaries under the specific classification are first reviewed by the TV Academy’s documentary peer group to determine their initial eligibility. To qualify, they must fulfill three key requirements: (1) exceptional cinematic quality, (2) significant social influence, and (3) groundbreaking artistic technique. If they pass this stage, as “Super/Man” has done, they are no longer eligible for consideration in any other documentary or non-fiction special or series category. Instead, these selected documentaries move on to a specialized jury who annually choose three to four titles for nomination. Essentially, they either receive a nomination in this category, or no recognition at all.
In January 2024, the movie known as Super/Man made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival. It then had a limited cinema release in September 2024 before becoming available on HBO/Max on December 7, 2024. With Rotten Tomatoes scores of 98% from both critics and viewers, it was chosen by the National Board of Review as one of the top five documentaries of the year. It also won the best documentary award at the BAFTA Awards, Producers Guild Awards, and Critics Choice Documentary Awards. However, when the list of 15 nominees for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar was announced, it was a major surprise that Super/Man was not included on this list.
HBO/Max boasts an unmatched record of triumphs in the Documentary Filmmaking category over the past two decades, clinching victory a remarkable ten times. This is double the number of victories amassed by its closest rival, and includes their latest win last year with “Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project“.
This year, the cable network has additionally proposed “Quad Gods”, a documentary showcasing New Yorkers afflicted with quadriplegia banding together to create an esports team, for possible recognition.
