As a longtime fan of the golden era of HBO, I must say that the return of Doug Ellin, Kevin Connolly, and Kevin Dillon to our screens feels like a homecoming. The reunion, titled ‘Ramble On’, promises a fresh take on the world of Hollywood, with a focus on second chances and redemption – something we could all use a bit more of in today’s world.
Although Entourage won’t be back for another reunion special, fans can look forward to a new series featuring the show’s creator Doug Ellin alongside stars Kevin Connolly and Kevin Dillon. Originating on HBO in 2004, Entourage was loosely based on the life of Mark Wahlberg, with the story revolving around fictional movie star Vincent Chase (Adrien Grenier) and his friend-turned-manager Eric “E” Murphy (Connolly). The cast includes Vincent’s half-brother Johnny “Drama” Chase (Dillon), childhood friend and driver Turtle (Jerry Ferrara), and aggressive agent Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven). The series was a ratings success for HBO, garnering several Emmy awards during its eight-season run and later producing a 2015 film that received mixed reviews from critics.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ellin, Connolly, and Dillon are joining forces once more for a fresh series titled “Ramble On.” This upcoming show revolves around Kevin Connolly portraying a fictionalized version of himself who aims to create a successful new podcast. A sneak peek at an unpublished trailer features Connolly engaging with Charlie Sheen, also in a fictionalized role, where he proposes the idea, “This could be a fantastic chance for both of us. It could serve as your way out of trouble.” The concept seems to be heavily influenced by Doug Ellin’s vision for “Ramble On,” as he described the series as exploring themes of second chances and redemption.
The episode trailer serves as a demonstration of feasibility, as Ellin seeks a potential buyer for the series. In truth, he’s been striving to launch it for quite some time now, with the most significant development being announced in 2022 when it was disclosed that Charlie Sheen had agreed to join the cast.
‘Entourage’ is a Very Different Show in 2024 Than in 2004.
The television show, “Entourage,” has experienced a surge in popularity recently, largely due to the reuniting of its key creators, Doug Ellin, Kevin Connolly, and Kevin Dillon, for the podcast titled “Victory.” This podcast provided recaps of the series episodes and featured numerous guest stars from the show. Unfortunately, the podcast came to an abrupt end, leading many fans to speculate that there was a disagreement between Dillon and Ellin, Connolly, as Dillon went on to host his own podcast, “Is That Something You Might Be Interested In,” while Connolly and Ellin continued the “Victory” podcast without Dillon. However, it seems that they are all still keen on collaborating again. This renewed interest in “Entourage” has sparked the creative team to consider a new series that carries the same DNA as “Entourage,” but does not revisit the original characters.
Initially, the show Entourage was popular, yet over time, several aspects of it have become problematic, especially following the #MeToo movement. The series and movie are filled with appearances by celebrities who have since faced public backlash, such as Danny Masterson and Paul Haggis, which can make viewing Entourage awkward due to their controversial pasts. Additionally, the show often had candid conversations between male friends about women and sexual topics that were once casually dismissed as “boys being boys” or “locker room talk.” However, these discussions are now widely recognized as misogynistic and inappropriate. Previously, Doug Ellin alleged that HBO attempted to hide the series on their streaming platform, attributing this to a “wave of PC culture.” At the time, Ellin stated:
I strongly disagree with the current perception that Entourage is just a crass show. When it first aired, The New York Times called it the smartest series on television. However, over time, there seems to have been a shift towards a more rigid, politically correct culture, and this has affected how people view the show. Despite this, I am a liberal who values equality and kindness for all.
Under the title “Ramble On“, Ellin appears to be steering clear of political correctness with Charlie Sheen, who has been dubbed “canceled”, among his cast. Previous cast members Kevin Connolly and Kevin Dillon have faced allegations of varying severity, which may explain the focus on redemption and fresh starts in the show. Keep an eye out for future developments.
