Shortly after news broke of Gilliland’s death, friends including comedian Dave Hill and Ryan Reynolds took to social media to remember him, with the Deadpool star calling the writer-producer “kind, gentle and funny as hell.”

For 27 years, Eric was more than just a friend to me. He was one of the first significant connections I made during the early stages of my career. Having completed his stint as a writer on ROSEANNE, he occupied a stylish bungalow office on the Fox lot in LA. I remember being incredibly anxious about meeting him, and to make matters worse, I had overindulged the night before which only added to my unease. The hangover wasn’t ideal, but it was the impending stomach trouble that had me worried… I could feel those unmistakable premonitory burps, signaling potential disaster

Reynolds reflected that Gilliland “wasn’t what I expected from a highly accomplished comedy writer. He was so open and friendly. When he smiled, his nostrils widened and his eyelids drooped slightly. It was as if Pixar was personified in Eric’s face. It felt like we had known each other for years. And there are likely hundreds, if not thousands of bartenders, cashiers, and shopkeepers from various countries who share the same sentiment.”

Michael Fishman, who played on Roseanne, posted a tribute to Eric Gilliland on Instagram, describing him as a “talented writer.” He continued by saying, “They always take the best. I know they’re enjoying themselves up there. Eric Gilliland had an abundance of dry wit and vast knowledge; he will never be forgotten.”

Lisa Gilliland shared that her brother would have wanted everyone to get a colonoscopy.
