Eric Weissmann, an esteemed entertainment lawyer known for representing iconic figures like Rita Hayworth, Robert Altman, Elizabeth Taylor, and Gene Wilder throughout his lengthy career spanning over half a century, has passed away at the age of 94.
Weissmann passed away on December 15th in Denver due to natural reasons, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, according to his granddaughter Sara McCrea.
Additionally, he worked with the likes of David Carradine, Keith Carradine, Peter Bogdanovich, Robert Aldrich, Paul Mazursky, and Mark Rydell among his roster of clients.
2012 saw the establishment of Weissmann’s private practice, following years of service as a senior partner at the Beverly Hills law firm, Weissmann Wolff Bergman Coleman Grodin. At that time, he expressed his excitement about the independence to focus entirely on his clients’ needs, stating, “I am eager to fully immerse myself in this newfound freedom.
The move was made following the merger of Weissmann Wolff with Weintraub Genshlea Chediak Tobin & Tobin based in Sacramento, marking the conclusion of an entertainment law firm that had been active in Hollywood since the 1980s.
1930 saw the birth of Weissmann in Zurich, but in 1940, he and his family chose to escape Europe via Mexico City, eventually settling in Los Angeles.
Prior to establishing Weissmann Wolff, he held positions as the global business leader at Warner Bros. and as a partner at Kaplan Livingston Goodwin Berkowitz & Selvin.
In 2010, he was honored as the “Entertainment Lawyer of the Year” by the Beverly Hills Bar Association, and in recognition of his outstanding contributions, he also received the “Distinguished Entertainment Leadership Award” from the Anti-Defamation League. He has amassed numerous other prestigious awards throughout his career.
Weissmann spoke at Harvard, Yale, and the AFI, and he taught classes at USC and Sherwood Oaks Experimental College.
Besides his granddaughter, those who survived are his wife, Mary Louise Weissmann, and his two daughters: Jessica McCrea and Tiffany Wind.
