Erik Menendez Slams Ryan Murphy’s ‘Monsters’: “Dishonest Portrayal of the Tragedies Surrounding Our Crime”

As a passionate advocate for truth and justice, I find myself deeply troubled by Ryan Murphy’s portrayal of Erik Menendez in his latest series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.” Having followed Erik’s story since its unfolding, I can’t help but feel disheartened that the narrative seems to have regressed to an era where the complexities of male trauma were not only overlooked but ridiculed.

Erik Menendez expresses dissatisfaction towards Ryan Murphy’s recent true-crime anthology series titled “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story“.

The Netflix series narrates the true story of brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez, who were found guilty in 1996 over the killings of their parents, José and Kitty Menendez.

Erik stated through a post by his wife Tammi Menendez on social media: “I feel we had progressed past the falsehoods and harmful characterizations of Lyle, which were exaggerated and clearly malicious in the series. I can’t help but suspect they were deliberately done. With a heavy heart, I express my belief that Ryan Murphy isn’t so unaware and mistaken about the truth of our lives to portray us this way without ill-intent.

I find it regrettable that Netflix’s misrepresentation of the events surrounding our crime has set back the painful truths by portraying a narrative rooted in outdated beliefs about male sexual abuse and trauma. This distorted portrayal, which was once used to construct narratives during an earlier time when such beliefs were more widespread, is now being challenged and debunked by numerous courageous victims who have come forward over the past two decades, bravely sharing their stories despite personal shame. However, it’s disheartening that Murphy continues this narrative through offensive and disturbing characterizations of Lyle, myself, and defamatory comments.

“Is the truth not enough? Erik added.

In this series, Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch play Lyle and Erik Menendez respectively, while Javier Bardem portrays José, Chloë Sevigny embodies Kitty, Nathan Lane takes on Dominick Dunne, and Ari Graynor assumes the role of Leslie Abramson. The show’s tagline goes: “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story delves into the sensational case that captivated the globe, sparked our current true crime obsession, and ultimately questions its viewers: Who are the true monsters in this story?

In his declaration, Erik emphasized, “The truth should remain the truth. It’s disheartening to realize that a single powerful individual can potentially erase years of advancement in revealing childhood traumas. Violence is never right, it’s not a remedy, and it’s always unfortunate. I can only hope that we never forget that inflicting violence upon a child results in countless hidden and unspoken crime scenes, shrouded in darkness beneath the glamour and glitter, often kept concealed until a tragic event affects everyone involved. To those who have extended their support to me, thank you from the deepest part of my heart.
