As a connoisseur of classic literature and cinema adaptations, I must say that this new version of “Traumnovelle” has piqued my interest. The tantalizing trailer promises a more explicit take on Arthur Schnitzler’s erotic novella, which was the inspiration behind Stanley Kubrick’s “Eyes Wide Shut”.
This is not your father’s Traumnovelle.
Florian Frerichs’ fresh take on Arthur Schnitzler’s iconic erotic novel, which served as the basis for Stanley Kubrick’s film Eyes Wide Shut, is expected to be a significantly more explicit portrayal of the narrative. The upcoming movie, set to kick off this year’s Oldenburg Film Festival on September 11, offers a steamy preview (as shown below).
Nikolai Kinski, known for his role in “Barbarians”, and Laurine Price from “Phoenix” portray a well-to-do couple residing in Berlin who are lured into an enigmatic and perilous realm of sensual escapades. Detlev Buck, Bruno Eyron, and Nora Islei contribute performances, while Sharon Brauner and Sharon Kovacs make special appearances. The production was a collaboration between Warnuts Entertainment and Studio Babelsberg.
Frerichs’ “Dream Story” shares many similarities with Kubrick’s adaptation. Once Amelia (Price) admits to harboring sexual desires for another man, a prominent city physician named Jakob (Kinski), he becomes curious about an exclusive sex event frequented by the city’s high society. Despite being cautioned that attending could be disastrous, Jakob successfully gains entry, disguised in a cloak and mask.
First published in 1926, Schnitzler’s Traumnovelle has been remade multiple times for the big screen, with Stanley Kubrick’s 1999 feature film being one of the most notable adaptations, starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. This film was remarkably produced over a span of 400 days. Sadly, shortly after completing the movie and only six days after showing his edited version to Cruise and Kidman, Kubrick passed away.
On September 11, Frerichs and his team are set to grace the world premiere of “Traumnovelle” in Oldenburg. This movie is slated for release in German cinemas at the beginning of 2025, thanks to Apollo Film.
The Oldenburg Festival, a prominent independent film event in Germany, is renowned for showcasing unconventional, thought-provoking, and offbeat films that lie beyond the mainstream. The 31st edition of this festival will take place from September 11th to the 15th.
