While the anime anthology series, “Star Wars: Visions,” primarily consists of standalone stories expanding various aspects of the “Star Wars” universe, one noteworthy tale, titled “The Ninth Jedi,” will be expanded upon in seasons 3 and beyond. The “Star Wars” narrative timeline follows a general structure, but leaves ample space for creative exploration. Curious to see how different artists portray the Force? Eager to understand their perspectives on being a Jedi or a Sith? Excited about discovering fresh, thrilling worlds they’ve crafted?
Here comes Star Wars: Visions, an animated series that presents various animation studios’ unique styles and interpretations of what Star Wars might look like. Starting in October, season 3 of Star Wars: Visions will have a different structure compared to previous seasons. Mostly, it will feature new, standalone short stories. However, some beloved characters and worlds will make a comeback, such as the powerful “Ninth Jedi.
The Ninth Jedi Is Set In A Timeline Where The Jedi Are Almost Extinct
In Star Wars: Visions’ first season, episode 5 titled “The Ninth Jedi”, we venture into a distant point in the Star Wars chronology where the once-prominent Jedi Order is barely existent and pursued by Sith disciples and their Jedi trackers. A veteran Jedi Master, Margrave Juro, aims to reconnect the scattered galaxy Jedi who have lost their masters and revive the Jedi Order. He recruits a saber-maker named Lah Zhima to craft lightsabers for his incoming allies, whom he has called to an ancient temple.
When two Jedi-seeking individuals show up at Zhima’s residence, he entrusts his Force-sensitive yet untrained daughter Kara to deliver the finished lightsabers to the Margrave. Initially hesitant to depart from her father, she eventually journeys to the temple following a skillful fight with one of her father’s swords against her pursuer. The truth unfolds when the called-upon “Jedi” ignite their lightsabers for the first time: out of the seven who responded to the Margrave’s summon, five were Sith apprentices. As soon as their plasma blades lit up, the colors of the lightsabers changed to red.
In the heat of our battle, my lightsaber began to glow a vibrant green – a testament to my growing bond with the Force. Once we’d vanquished the Sith, the four of us remaining Jedi – myself included – were resolved on two missions: rescuing my father and tracking down the five other Jedi who’d been disguised by those acolytes. Thus, I found myself stepping into a new role – the ‘Ninth Jedi’.
One intriguing aspect of this episode lies in its portrayal of lightsaber colors. Typically, the color of a Jedi’s blade has symbolic significance based on the kyber crystal it contains. But here, the color can shift swiftly to reflect the wielder themselves. For example, one of the Force-users called forth for battle initially succumbed to the dark side, causing their lightsaber to glow red. Yet, as the fight progressed and they regained composure, their lightsaber transformed into a deep purple, suggesting a unique, complex bond with the Force.
In “The Ninth Jedi,” we delved into a semi-autonomous narrative that offered a fresh take on the ongoing battle between the Sith and the Jedi. Leaving us with questions like, who are the other Jedi? Will Kara succeed in rescuing her father? The ending certainly hinted at more possibilities. Fortunately, we’ll get to follow Kara and Juro further as their story officially continues.
The Ninth Jedi Timeline Will Continue In Star Wars Visions Season 3
Visions” Season 3 is set to present three ongoing tales from Season 1, such as the continuations of “The Duel”, “The Village Bride”, and undoubtedly “The Ninth Jedi”. This information was shared at this year’s Star Wars Celebration in Japan. The forthcoming episode focusing on Kara, titled “The Ninth Jedi: Child of Hope”, will chronicle Kara’s journey as she persists in her mission to rescue her father.
It’s likely that Kara’s narrative will be linked with the Margrave’s ambition to reassemble the Jedi Order again. However, we’ll only know for sure once the episode is broadcasted.
In addition, at Celebration, some footage was shared, featuring scenes of Kara interacting with a robot friend, what seemed like both Jedi and Sith characters, and a conversation about a conflict that occurred before Kara’s birth.
Next Year’s Visions Spinoff Will Continue To Explore These Sith Wars
Beyond this, it’s worth noting that Lucasfilm has confidence in Production I.G.’s portrayal of Star Wars. The storyline of Kara’s world is not only set to continue in Visions season 3 but will also expand into an additional animated spinoff, slated for release in 2026. This limited series, titled The Ninth Jedi: A Star Wars Visions Presents, delves deeper into the galaxy’s condition under Sith rule and may provide insight into the war between the Sith and Jedi that led to their supremacy. Fingers crossed, it will offer further explanations about this long-standing conflict.
The captivating tale of “The Ninth Jedi” offers a peek into a potential future scenario for the galaxy, rather than an entirely different universe. It allows us to speculate on the series of events that could have led the galaxy to this specific timeline. Questions like what became of the Jedi, how they were defeated by the Sith once more, and if, when, or how they might rise again, and the changes the galaxy would experience upon the restoration of the Jedi Order, can be pondered. The universe created by Production I.G. in Star Wars: Visions presents a wealth of possibilities, and I eagerly anticipate further growth within this imaginative realm.
