The recent addition to their brood, their seventh child, is none other than Jonas, but fate has a twist in store for this newborn. The Rani renames him Desiderium and bestows upon him an astonishing power that sets him apart from his kin. However, the true implications of this lineage, stretching back through generations, remain shrouded in mystery.
It’s later discovered that Desiderium is the divine entity of Wishes within the realm of ‘Doctor Who’, belonging to its pantheon. Still quite young, he lacks full control over his powers and they aren’t particularly potent unless guided by someone else. Essentially, whoever possesses Desiderium has the ability to manipulate reality according to their whims, as demonstrated by the Rani turning other Zufalls into assorted flowers and birds before departing. His father doesn’t seem to have any powers, indicating that being the seventh son of a seventh son does not automatically grant deity status.
Instead, it seems that Herr Zufall’s youngest child may have reached the limit of this specific occurrence. Interestingly, seven is a number frequently linked to superstition and considered lucky by many cultures. Consequently, it holds significance in Desiderium’s past and the power he commands. Despite his youth, he hasn’t fully developed as a character yet, but has demonstrated that he belongs among the Pantheon by emitting the same melodious laugh heard in “The Giggle” first in 2023.
The Purpose Of The Rani Creating A New World Explained
The Rani needed the doubt of a Time Lord to access another reality
As a movie enthusiast, I found myself captivated by the fresh depiction of Earth, a creation jointly orchestrated by the Rani, Conrad, and the Deity of Wishes. At first glance, it appeared as if this new world was designed to deceive everyone into abandoning their past lives and submitting to its control. However, the Rani’s true intentions were later unveiled: she had no interest in ensnaring just anyone; her ultimate target was none other than the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa). Instead of perfecting an impenetrable illusion, the Rani secretly desires for everyone to question their new lives, especially the Doctor.
In simpler terms, the Rani explains that while human doubts may have some influence, the doubts of a Time Lord can shatter the very structure of reality. This is exactly what she intends to do. She has found herself in another dimension, trying to release a being called Omega who is hidden there. Normally, Omega is associated with the Anti-Matter Universe, but the Rani clarifies that he is now residing in the Underverse. By manipulating the Doctor’s doubts, she begins to set Omega free – at the cost of Earth.
Why The Rani Needed The Doctor’s Vindicator
The infant God’s powers weren’t enough for the Rani’s needs
In Desiderium’s abilities lies a significant piece of the Rani’s scheme, for he is the only known deity in the Pantheon capable of manipulating reality as such. However, being just an infant, his limited self-awareness and rudimentary powers demanded augmentation. While Conrad guided his powers, the Rani sought a method to amplify Desiderium’s inherent talents to match her aspirations of altering Earth itself. She devised a plan by making the Doctor assist her in this endeavor.
The intricate network of power that the Doctor unwittingly established by transporting the TARDIS and Vindicator across numerous temporal and spatial locations funneled energy back to Earth. It was on this planet where the Rani had been preparing to enact her scheme. Upon the Doctor’s return to Earth, the Rani seized the Vindicator and utilized it as a receiver for the power flowing towards Earth. She then merged this energy with Desiderium’s inherent abilities to deceive Earth’s inhabitants and exploit their uncertainties.
How Doctor Who’s “Wish World” Works
The Rani’s new version of Earth is Conrad’s idea of how everything should be
In Mrs. Flood’s words, Conrad is referred to as “The boy who desires a better world“. It appears that the transformation of our planet aligns with Conrad’s vision for it, but there are some troubling aspects. For instance, same-sex relationships are often concealed and the disabled population is secluded, left to struggle on their own, essentially shunned by society. However, it’s important to note that Conrad’s ideal world reflects certain realities.
Inside the world of Wish, everyone retains some form of their original identity, with characters like Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) having a clearer recollection of their past lives compared to others. Real connections are preserved, but adjusted according to Conrad’s perspective. For example, the Doctor is known as John Smith and is married to Belinda (Varada Sethu), instead of them just being traveling companions without a romantic relationship. They also have a child together in this altered setting.
In the revamped universe, it appears that the UNIT team from Doctor Who has shifted careers to become an insurance company instead. Previously responsible for safeguarding Earth from extraterrestrial threats, which Conrad finds questionable, this new reality seems to have eliminated aliens altogether. However, even in this altered Earth, there are lingering doubts among the populace about the absence of aliens. Those who voice these suspicions are apprehended by the authorities, and their suppressed thoughts sometimes materialize as a mug mysteriously passing through solid objects and shattering – known as Slips. These events have become an accepted part of life in this new world.
Why The Rani Wants To Bring Back Omega
Omega’s return is clearly at the heart of the Rani’s desires
Omega occupies a unique position within Time Lord history. Prior to the Time Lords, he resided on Gallifrey. In fact, it was his work that significantly contributed to the creation of time travel technology among the Gallifreyans. However, an experiment intended to validate his theories resulted in disaster, leading people to believe he had perished. In reality, Omega endured in the Anti-Matter Universe and became confined there. In the series’ primary universe, he was celebrated as a hero for his part in shaping the Time Lord society. Tragically, upon his reappearance, he succumbed to villainy.
In the show “Wish World”, we don’t learn explicitly why the Rani desires Omega’s return. It might be due to her deep respect for what the esteemed Time Lord achieved, or perhaps she has a task for him since he’s been rewritten into the Pantheon. Omega had previously attempted to return from the Anti-Matter Universe, but those attempts didn’t succeed because his borrowed body wasn’t suitable for that realm. Thus, the cunning Rani might have devised a method to permanently bring Omega back into the world of Doctor Who.
