The release of “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” in 2026 is something fans are already eagerly anticipating, as the main cast has been officially confirmed. This upcoming film, based on Suzanne Collins’ novel by the same name, takes us back to the universe of “The Hunger Games”. The story unfolds 24 years prior to when Katniss Everdeen volunteered as a tribute, starting with the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games. Instead of the usual two tributes per district, four are chosen for this special occasion celebrating the Capitol’s 50-year dominance. Since the story takes place around the same time as the initial Hunger Games movies, long-term fans will delight in seeing younger depictions of cherished characters portrayed by new talents. Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’s 13 Main Actors & Characters

Joseph Zada – Haymitch Abernathy

Initially, Haymitch Abernathy was introduced in “The Hunger Games” as a worn-out, desolate individual who sought solace in alcohol, having been the sole survivor from District 12 and tasked with guiding Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. Portrayed by Woody Harrelson, Haymitch evolves throughout the series from being indifferent to becoming an advocate for a more just world.

In the film “Sunrise on the Reaping“, Joseph Zada takes on the character, portraying a youthful, unbroken version of Haymitch. Previously, Zada has been seen in the movies “The Speedway Murders” and “Invisible Boys“.

Whitney Peak – Lenore Dove Baird

Readers who have delved into the prequel of “The Hunger Games,” titled “A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” are likely acquainted with the surname Baird. The character Lucy Gray Baird (portrayed by Rachel Zegler), emerged victorious in the 10th Hunger Games, and resumed her life within her nomadic minstrel family, the Covey.

In simpler terms, Lenore Dove Baird, portrayed by Whitney Peak (known for shows like “Gossip Girl” and “Hocus Pocus 2”), shares family ties with Lucy Gray. Her love for music and affinity towards Edgar Allan Poe’s poems make her unique among the children of District 12, who are merely trying to survive.

McKenna Grace – Maysilee Donner

In the films, District 12 appears to be grimy and impoverished. Yet, Maysilee Donner perceives herself above such circumstances as she hails from a more affluent family within the district, often making a point to let others know.

McKenna Grace, who is recognized for her roles in “The Handmaid’s Tale” (recently discussed in regards to its book vs. show contrasts) and “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”, has been cast as Maysilee in the upcoming project.

Ben Wang – Wyatt Callow

Similar to Mayslie, Wyatt Callow introduces a fresh character from an uncharted corner of District 12. His kin, often referred to as the “Booker Boys,” are involved in illicit gambling within the district. The Callows profit from the misery of children who participate in these games, making their family’s activities even more appalling when Wyatt is chosen in the reaping.

Ben Wang is set to animate the character Wyatt in the upcoming movie “Sunrise on the Reaping“. Wang has previously appeared in films such as “Karate Kid: Legends“, “American Born Chinese“, and the 2024 release “Mean Girls“.

Iona Bell – Lou Lou / Molly McCann – Louella McCoy

For individuals unfamiliar with the novel, it’s important to note that Louella and Lou Lou share striking resemblances in both appearance and behavior. Interestingly, they were introduced together because of their strong connection – unlike other characters.

Molly McCann takes on the role of Louella McCoy. Previously, she’s appeared in “Star Wars Visions” and “Bad Sisters”. In her previous acting stint, Iona Bell portrayed Lou Lou, a character she played in the 2022 short film titled “Pulp by Rind”.

Elle Fanning – Effie Trinket

Initially portrayed by Elizabeth Banks, Effie Trinket’s extravagant style and naivety quickly turned her into an unforgettable character. When fans of the films say “‘May the odds be ever in your favor,’” they are recalling her famous line. It appears that Maya Hawke, who is recognized for her roles in “Inside Out 2” and “Stranger Things”, could be an ideal selection to portray a younger version of the character Wiress.

Kelvin Harrison Jr. – Beetee Latier

Initially, Beetee was introduced in the novel “Catching Fire” as a winner hailing from District 3. Portrayed by Jeffrey Wright, Beetee’s exceptional proficiency in electronics and wiring earned him a significant role in the uprising. Despite his repeated attempts to undermine the Capitol, he has served within its oppressive administration as well.

In the 50th edition of the Hunger Games, Beetee takes on a mentor role, with Kelvin Harrison Jr. portraying him. Harrison has previously appeared in “It Comes at Night” and “The Lion King (Mufasa)”. If some fans weren’t fond of Beetee earlier, they might find themselves won over by this performance.

Lili Taylor – Mags Flanagan

In the film adaptation of “The Hunger Games,” Mags Flanagan, portrayed by Lynn Cohen, gained immense affection without uttering a single word. Ceasar Flickerman is a flamboyant figure from the Capitol who runs the TV show for the Hunger Games. During his interviews with the contestants, he’s not afraid to push boundaries, as far as it results in exciting television.

As a passionate movie-goer, I must commend Stanley Tucci’s exceptional portrayal in the initial Hunger Games film series. His character, subtly yet significantly, aided Katniss and Peeta in their journey long before they set foot in the arena, adding depth to the storyline that resonated with audiences worldwide.

At dawn during the Reaping, Kieran Culkin was discovered as a younger depiction of Julius Caesar. Known for his attention-grabbing performances in “Succession” and “A Real Pain”, Culkin boasts an impressive stage presence that suggests he could deliver a compelling portrayal of Caesar.

Ralph Fiennes – President Snow

Every compelling narrative needs a formidable antagonist, and for The Hunger Games, that role is filled perfectly by President Snow. In the initial film adaptations, the talented Donald Sutherland breathed life into this powerful, malevolent figure. Calm and composed, President Snow meted out pain and punishment at will to maintain order in Panem.

In the novel “A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes“, Tom Blyth portrayed a young Coriolanus Snow, who evolved from a bright but struggling adolescent into an adult yearning for global domination.
