After a long wait of four years, I’m thrilled to say that Netflix’s Fear Street series has returned with Prom Queen. However, I must admit that I was left a bit underwhelmed after seeing its Rotten Tomatoes score – a mere 50%. This new slasher seems to be causing quite the divide among critics, with some praising it as “a thrilling rollercoaster of fear” while others label it as “a disappointing dud.

Featuring a diverse ensemble of actors such as India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Fina Strazza, and David Iacono, the movie “Fear Street: Prom Queen” is based on the 15th book in R.L. Stine’s popular series. The story revolves around Shadyside High’s annual prom event, where the school’s clique of popular girls are engaged in their usual mix of sweet and malicious maneuvers to secure the crown. However, when a courageous newcomer decides to join the race, and the other girls begin mysteriously vanishing, the class of ’88 is in for an unexpectedly terrifying prom night. This plotline may be familiar to fans of slasher movies, but Sharai Bohannon from Horror Press criticizes it as disappointing.

The film ‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’ seems to be a result of a collaboration between the CW and Tubi, but instead of being a creative fusion, it appears as if they were forced into a hasty production in some dark, unfamiliar place, perhaps even under the ominous shadow of a Radio Shack. It lacks the charm and coherence one might expect from such collaborations, suggesting that the creators may have misunderstood their brief or assumed their audience has lower standards.

According to Archi Sengupta from LeisureByte.com, “Fear Street: Prom Queen” is a terribly made film that lacks both drama and terror. Similarly, Kristen Maldonado from Pop Culture Planet wasn’t impressed, describing it as being set in an ’80s world that resembles Stranger Things but lacking any genuine authenticity. Nick Schager from The Daily Beast found it to be excessively gory yet unoriginal and predictable, while Greg Archer of MovieWeb stated it is full of bloodshed but short on mystery and intrigue. In other words, it seems this movie didn’t win over many critics!
