The films titled “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” have experienced delays from their initial scheduled release dates, with various factors contributing to these postponements. Originally, “Avengers: Doomsday” was slated for a premiere on May 1, 2026. The narrative for “Avengers: Secret Wars”, on the other hand, was planned for a cinematic debut approximately one year later, on May 7, 2027.
It was announced in May 2025 that the releases of “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” were pushed back. Interestingly, this came just over a month after production on “Avengers: Doomsday” had started. As it stands now, “Avengers: Doomsday” is expected to hit theaters globally on December 18, 2026, followed by “Avengers: Secret Wars” on December 17, 2027. Given various factors at play, these delays aren’t too surprising. It’s possible that Marvel Studios made this move to address potential issues that might have arisen for the colossal upcoming Marvel films.
6. Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars Need More Time To Produce
The main reason for the delay of both “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” is to extend the production schedule. Movies like these, with extensive content, typically require a significant amount of time for filming and post-production work. For instance, “Avengers: Infinity War” commenced shooting in January 2017, allowing it approximately 16 months for finalization. Following that, “Avengers: Endgame” began production in August 2017, giving it close to two years for full production.
Contrary to Avengers: Doomsday, started filming in late April 2025, implying it had over a year for shooting and post-production. Given the extensive cast list of Avengers: Doomsday compared to that of Infinity War, this timeline seems unfeasible. By providing an additional seven months for preparation, Marvel Studios has guaranteed adequate production time for Avengers: Doomsday. This extra year will also secure sufficient time for Avengers: Secret Wars.
5. Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars Delays Can Help Marvel Avoid CGI Issues
Marvel Has Struggled With CGI In Recent Years
Based on the previous discussion, pushing back the releases of “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” allows Marvel to smooth out their post-production pipeline. To clarify, a year for “Avengers: Doomsday” to film and finalize post-production would likely be insufficient, even if filming finishes in six months as planned. This is because the visual effects team would only have six months to complete their work, which is challenging given the ongoing quality concerns with CGI that Marvel Studios has faced since 2019.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled about the new release dates for “Avengers: Doomsday.” If the Russos are right and filming wraps in six months as they suggested to Collider, this would mean that post-production could stretch from October 2025 to December 2026 instead of just October 2025 to May 2026. Here’s hoping that the past challenges Marvel faced with overdoing changes in post-production have been addressed, and this extended timeline will only serve to improve “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.
4. December Is Traditionally A Release Month For Huge Releases
December Has Held Some Big Box Office Hitters In The Past
Few films have grossed over $2 billion at the box office, with merely seven managing this feat so far. Notably, four out of these seven were unveiled in December – with Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Ne Zha 2 being exceptions to the trend. The likes of Titanic, Avatar, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Avatar: The Way of Water were all premiered in December of their release years and turned out to be extraordinary box office successes. Following Endgame, the highest-earning Marvel Cinematic Universe film released post-Endgame is Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was also debuted in December and fell just short of $2 billion in earnings.
It’s logical for “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” to aim for success during their releases. Although they’ll face tough competition, such as “Dune 3” for the first movie or “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” for the second, December has consistently been a strong month for high-budget franchise films. Considering this pattern, it’s difficult to question Marvel’s decision to release their upcoming “Avengers” movies in December.
3. Disney Can Space Out Its MCU Releases More
The MCU’s Quality Over Quantity Mandate Will Benefit
Over the past few years, Bob Iger’s return as Disney CEO has emphasized a focus on quality rather than quantity in Marvel’s productions, following the chaotic Phase 4. As reported by THR, The Thunderbolts movie set for release in 2025 was the initial project that aligned with this strategy. By postponing Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, Marvel has underscored its dedication to this approach.
As a diehard Marvel Cinematic Universe fan, I’m thrilled to share that instead of cramming two MCU films in just two months during 2026, as was initially planned with “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” hitting theaters in July 2026, the release schedule post-2025 seems more quality-driven. The only MCU film slated for 2026 will be “Spider-Man 4,” leaving a year gap between it and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” in 2025 on one side, and an extended 15-month break before we get to see “Avengers: Doomsday.” No other MCU movies are confirmed for 2027 yet, so for now, our attention is solely on the highly anticipated “Avengers: Secret Wars.
2. Disney Avoids A Conflict Between Marvel & Star Wars
Both Franchises Can Coexist Happily
One of the reasons that caused a delay in the release of “Avengers: Doomsday” was beneficial for Disney overall. If the film had been released on May 1, 2026, as originally planned, it would have competed with another major Disney franchise, “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” which was scheduled for release on May 22 of that year. Previously, in May 2018, a “Star Wars” and MCU movie went head-to-head at the box office, resulting in “Solo: A Star Wars Story” being a notorious failure when it faced off against “Avengers: Infinity War.
When Marvel Studios disclosed that Doomsday was set to release in May 2026, concerns arose about how this might impact The Mandalorian and Grogu. However, now it appears there’s no cause for worry as they can both be released without interference. In fact, five months apart, The Mandalorian & Grogu can grace the screens in May 2026 untroubled by any competition from its sister franchise. Later on, in November 2026, Avengers: Doomsday can follow suit, ensuring a smooth timeline and resolving any potential clashes that might have arisen if the MCU film had been released earlier as planned.
1. The Avengers Delays Will Give Marvel More Time To Polish The Scripts
Which May Or May Not Be Finished
As a follower, I can share that the primary reason for the delays in releasing both films, namely “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” was due to some issues with the scripts. When filming for “Avengers: Doomsday” started in April 2025, there were numerous reports suggesting that the final script for the movie was still under development. This claim was further substantiated by several actors from the “Thunderbolts*” team, who revealed they hadn’t yet read a complete script despite the production already commencing.
If filming for “Avengers: Doomsday” is underway, it’s likely that the script for “Avengers: Secret Wars” isn’t yet finalized. This could potentially lead to confusion on set about the movie’s storyline and require actors to prepare without a clear vision. However, since both films have been postponed, there’s now a greater opportunity for Marvel Studios to smooth out any script issues, resulting in more organized production processes for “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”.
