Rian Johnson, director of Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, may not be finished with the Star Wars universe just yet. Although details about his new trilogy have been scarce since its initial announcement, Johnson has stated in a recent interview that he is still involved with the franchise. Despite mixed reactions to The Last Jedi when it was released in 2017 and its status as one of the more divisive Star Wars films, Disney announced during their 2017 quarterly shareholder meeting that Johnson would lead a new Star Wars trilogy. In 2020, Netflix purchased a pair of Knives Out sequels for an impressive $469 million, further solidifying Johnson’s involvement in the project. However, updates on the trilogy have been few and far between since then, leading to speculation that the project had been canceled. But Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has since confirmed that the delay was due solely to Johnson’s commitment to Netflix for the Knives Out sequels.
Johnson Would Be ‘the Happiest Person’ Revisiting Star Wars
During an interview with The Independent, Johnson was questioned about the current state of his long-delayed Star Wars trilogy. Johnson stated that he might still be involved with Star Wars in the future.
Currently, I’ve found myself immersed in a mystery akin to a rabbit hole, leaving less time for other projects. However, that doesn’t mean I won’t revisit this in the future. If I ever get the chance to return to the Star Wars universe, it would bring me immense joy.
Although the Knives Out series has been consuming his creative energy from the Star Wars universe, Johnson’s passion for the franchise remains strong. It’s encouraging to learn about his optimistic views on the trilogy’s prospective future.
As a die-hard Star Wars fan myself, I can’t help but reflect on the turbulence that surrounded “The Last Jedi.” Back then, those heated online debates felt like a punch to the gut, labeled as “incredibly painful” by Rian Johnson. Yet, looking back now, I find myself with a more optimistic outlook about my time in this iconic universe. In a recent interview, Johnson opened up about the “wars between Star Wars fans,” battles that left an indelible mark on me too – albeit in a positive way.
The interaction with the fans throughout has been an incredibly pleasant and uplifting journey for me. It’s made me an even more passionate Star Wars fan than before, considering that it holds a special place in my heart from my childhood days.
Is there a chance that Johnson’s long-awaited trilogy will eventually be realized? The upcoming release of “Knives Out 3” this year might signal the completion of his commitment to Netflix, which was previously stated as the only hurdle for the trilogy’s production.
Meanwhile, whispers about Kathleen Kennedy potentially stepping down from her role at Lucasfilm leave her future and the fate of projects she advocated uncertain. For now, it seems that Johnson and Star Wars remain connected, even though specific updates may not be forthcoming soon.
