Escape from Tarkov Ground Zero map walkthrough: Extracts, Quests & more

As a seasoned survivor of the harsh wastelands of Tarkov, I can tell you that every corner holds its own set of dangers, and Ground Zero is no exception. The building you’ve just descended into hides threats around every turn, but fear not! We’re here to guide you through the labyrinth of extracts that await you on this battleground.

Ground Zero isn’t just the newest map in Escape from Tarkov, but it’s also the perfect playground for beginners. Here I’ve laid out a full walkthrough of the map, including all of the extracts, quests, hot spots, and more!

Ground Zero matchmaking explained

As an avid player of Escape from Tarkov, I must say that Ground Zero stands out among other maps due to its exclusive level-based system. Unlike other maps where all players roam freely, Ground Zero is the only one with a hidden level limit. This means that although the map remains largely unchanged, there are actually two different player pools based on your character’s level. This unique feature adds an interesting layer to the gameplay experience, as it can influence encounters and loot opportunities.

The initial line-up is for players whose levels are at 20 or lower, essentially the ‘beginner’ version of both the map and arguably the game itself. Once you surpass level 21, however, you’ll be moved to the advanced queue, which includes several intriguing and thrilling upgrades.

Initially, the amount of treasure indicated on the map is boosted, and it becomes more likely to discover valuable and top-tier loot. The difficulty of Scavs across the map increases, and there’s even a possibility that Kollontay, the Scav Boss of this map, may show up, along with Cultists. Additionally, airdrops could potentially appear on the map now, offering additional loot opportunities.

In this system, neither queue can be manually chosen; instead, your participation is determined based on your level. If you’re below level 21 and join a queue with a higher-level friend, you’ll automatically be assigned to the advanced queue, even if you don’t meet the requirements for it yourself.

Map, layout, and hot spots

At Ground Zero, you’ll find a primary thoroughfare dotted with about seven significant structures. Many of these buildings can be entered and offer varying heights, while there’s also an underground tunnel system beneath the central street. This network enables you to move between buildings and along the main path without being exposed to the open air.

The Union Credit Bank building, also recognized as the Emercom Checkpoint, is located at the northern end of the road, with the Nakatani building situated to your right (southeast) after that.

In the northeastern part of the map, TerraGroup stands as one of the largest buildings. To its northwest, there’s SkySide. Directly beneath SkySide, you’ll find Fusion positioned westward along the middle of the road. Across from Fusion, towards the east, lies Empire.

Lastly, you’ll find the Capital Insight Building situated in the southwestern part of the map, directly neighboring the Nakatani Building.

Hot spots

Ground Zero stands out among other maps because it lacks a centralized high-activity zone, unlike places such as Dorms on Customs or Resort on Shoreline where most action tends to concentrate.

In essence, every structure stands as a distinct hotspot, meaning they are individually significant. At the onset of each game round, or “wipe,” you’re likely to encounter other players more frequently around quest sites, but the combat is usually dispersed throughout the five accessible buildings and the connecting streets.

As a gamer, I find that the map in this game tends to be compact and follows a straightforward path. So, when you hear gunfire echoing, don’t think you’re far off. Here’s a tip: if you’re trying to locate PMCs, I suggest you try playing on the upper floors of buildings like Fusion or Empire. The higher vantage points often provide a better view and advantage in these fast-paced encounters.

From this vantage point, you’ll enjoy an excellent perspective of the street below and surrounding structures, allowing for a fantastic opportunity to catch off-guard opponents unaware of your presence.

Ground Zero bosses

On Ground Zero, the primary Scav Boss is Kollontay, however, during the hours of 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM, there’s a possibility for Cultists and even the Cultist Priest to appear as well.

In the version of the map designed for matches level 21 and above, bosses are exclusively present. Therefore, if you’re still relatively new or low-level, there’s no need to concern yourself with them.

Kollontay

In Tarkov, Kollontay stands out as unlike most other bosses due to his unpredictable nature. Unlike others with specific locations or spawn points, Kollontay can appear almost anywhere on the map, making it possible to encounter him virtually anywhere during your raids, which increases the element of surprise.

He’s exclusively found within TerraGroup and Empire structures, but can appear along the entire road leading up to them, and also beneath the ground in tunnels.

Accompanied by four sturdily armed bodyguards that you’ll have to eliminate as well, he might appear, and it’s risky to cross paths with them in unfavorable situations or at inopportune moments. Kollontay himself may show up equipped with a variety of potent weapons, such as the RPD and AKMN, among others.

His greatest asset becomes evident when he brandishes the PR-Taran police baton, for any players nearby will be afflicted with a state of alarm, causing their current weapons to malfunction temporarily. This effect lasts as long as Kollontay carries the police baton in active use.

In simple terms, there isn’t a specific plan for handling this situation beyond using a weapon that can’t be jammed, such as the PPSh-41. Therefore, it would be wise to maintain as much distance as you can or flee until the situation resolves itself.

As a gamer, it’s crucial to ensure your keybinds are properly set up to handle potential weapon malfunctions. I’ve gone into great detail about this in our dedicated guide, so you can clear a jam quickly with just a few button presses. This makes managing such situations much smoother and less stressful.

Cultist Priest

On Ground Zero, cult members behave similarly to how they do on other maps, so handling them should follow a similar strategy. You’ll encounter the Priest accompanied by three to four common cultists. They will try to sneak up on you without making noise and attack using poisoned blades.

Keep a vigilant watch on your environment when venturing out at night, and act swiftly and forcefully if you encounter any threats in the wilderness. In other words, stay alert and defend yourself promptly when necessary.

Ground Zero extracts

Emercom Checkpoint

At the summit of the main road, near the Unity Credit Bank structure, you’ll find the Emercom Checkpoint. This is where players who start on the southern part of Ground Zero typically appear.

As a seasoned urban explorer with years of navigating cityscapes under my belt, I can confidently say that this location is ideally situated between the Skyside and TerraGroup buildings. Unlike the Nakatani, where you might have to spend extra time figuring out the entrance, here all you need to do is simply head towards the doors. In no time at all, the countdown should commence. So, let’s embark on this urban adventure together!

Nakatani Basement Stairs

If you find yourself starting at the top of the map, the Nakatani Basement Stairs will serve as your primary exit point instead.

You can expect to find this location nestled between the Empire and Capital Insight buildings, situated at the base of the primary street, specifically inside the Nakatani building.

Instead of accessing the Nakatani building like Emercom does, you’ll find the entry point through a barbed wire gate. Once you’ve entered, simply turn left, pass through the final door, and follow the path marked by stars to initiate the countdown sequence.

As a seasoned camper who has had my fair share of unexpected encounters in the wilderness, I can’t stress enough the importance of vigilance when entering this popular campsite. The moment you step inside that building and start descending the stairs, remember that safety is never guaranteed – there could be someone lurking around every corner, ready to catch you off guard. Trust me, I’ve learned the hard way that it’s better to be cautious than sorry.

Police Cordon V-Ex

To utilize the Police Cordon V-Ex vehicle for the Burning Rubber mission given by Skier, it will cost you 5,000 rubles first, as a payment to the driver.

As a seasoned urban explorer who’s navigated countless cityscapes, I’ve learned that patience is often key when seeking hidden gems. The vehicle you’re looking for can be found at the end of a quiet side road nestled between the imposing structures of TerraGroup and Empire buildings. But don’t rush – just as the old saying goes, good things come to those who wait. So, take a moment, gather your thoughts, and in a minute or so, the car should vacate its spot, revealing itself to you like a treasure waiting to be discovered.

In the game, just as with other vehicles, this one is disposable after a single raid. It’s possible someone else may have claimed it before you, but if you’re playing with a group, the car can accommodate up to four players simultaneously. However, keep in mind that each player must have 5,000₽ on hand to join the ride.

Mira Ave

Mirage Avenue is a location that can be found down a road located beyond SkySide, accessible by taking the ramp connecting SkySide and Fusion, then continuing your journey down it.

To unlock the container, you require a green signal flare. Fortunately, there’s always a chance for one to be found near a deceased scav propped against a yellow bus on the same road. However, if the flare isn’t on the body, it suggests that someone has likely exited through the extraction point already.

If you’ve gotten the flare or brought it with you, make your way along the path behind Skyside. A message will appear at the bottom right of the screen when you’re within the flare zone.

Light the vertical skyward flight of the green flare, making sure it reaches its maximum height since it won’t function properly otherwise. Once you observe the flare ignite in the sky, proceed ahead, as it indicates safety.

When playing in a team, just one member should ignite the flare to create an opportunity for everyone else. However, this method is effective only if you have joined the raid alongside those specific teammates.

Scav Checkpoint

In summary, the Scav Checkpoint is the final location on Ground Zero, and it can only be accessed through teamwork between a Private Military Contractor (PMC) and a Scavenger (Scav).

In my gaming world, just past the Emercom Checkpoint to the east, you’ll spot the location I’m referring to down the road, beyond the entrance of TerraGroup parking garage. As we discussed earlier, whether you’re a PMC or a Scav, you’ll need to persuade another survivor to team up with you – quite the risky move, but hey, survival is all about taking calculated risks, right?

Ground Zero quests

Within the initial stages of the game, you’ll find yourself tackling five missions connected to Ground Zero. Fortunately, I have detailed guides available for each mission that will help navigate your way!

Shooting Cans

First in Line

Burning Rubber

Saving the Mole

Luxurious Life

To achieve success in the game with the Trader, it’s essential to navigate through each of the five levels. Mastering Ground Zero will give you the greatest chance of accomplishment.
