Esha Deol calls father Dharmendra ‘orthodox’ for not allowing her to do films and marry at 18; reveals ‘lying’ to go out on late nights: ‘It was not easy’

As a lifestyle expert, I must commend Esha Deol for her relentless spirit and determination to carve out her own path in the face of significant opposition from her father and strict upbringing. Her story is an inspiring testament to resilience and the power of following one’s dreams, even when it seems impossible.

Actress Esha Deol, daughter of the renowned Dharmendra, faced significant challenges in entering the film industry despite her family background. Her father, known for his orthodox views, was opposed to her pursuing an acting career and preferred she marry and settle down by 18. In a recent interview, she said, “He didn’t want that I should enter the movies. He is a bit orthodox, rightfully so. He is a Punjabi father, and he wanted that we should get married, settle down at 18.” She added, “There was a phase where I would lie to go out on late nights.”

In an interview with Hauterrfly, Esha Deol characterized her father as “traditionally minded,” sharing that his conservative beliefs were shaped by his upbringing. She mentioned that he advocated for her to marry at a young age, which was common in his surroundings. The actress explained further that while her father, a Punjabi man, believed she should marry and settle down by 18 because of his background, her own upbringing was distinctly different.

His behavior stems from his upbringing, as all the women in his household were taught similarly. However, my upbringing was significantly distinct,” she explained.

As I reflect on my journey, I cannot help but credit my mother, Hema Malini, for instilling in me the passion for film that eventually led me to carve out a niche in this dynamic industry. Growing up with her, I was inspired and motivated to create my own identity, one that would stand apart from hers.

During our chat, Esha shared an insight about her upbringing, explaining that her grandmother maintained a firm set of guidelines in their household – forbidding them to wear miniskirts, revealing tops like spaghetti straps, and staying out past a certain hour. “My grandmother was quite rigid,” she noted. “We couldn’t wear these kinds of clothes or go out late.” Esha disclosed that during her rebellious period, she would sometimes deceive her parents to slip away at night. However, she admitted that those forbidden experiences brought her joy nonetheless.

In the song “Dhoom Machale” from the movie Dhoom (2004), Esha Deol delivered a memorable and energetic performance, solidifying her assertive image. However, following the success of Dhoom, films like Dus, LOC: Kargil, Yuva, and No Entry failed to maintain long-term popularity. After stepping away from the film industry for a while, Esha is back in the limelight with her recent role in Hunter: Tootega Nahi Todega.
