Esports 2024’s Biggest Moments and Upcoming Tournaments You Don’t Want to Miss

As someone who has been immersed in the world of esports for quite some time now, I must say that 2024 has been nothing short of spectacular! The sheer number of tournaments and the level of competition have been truly inspiring.

2024 is shaping up to be a year that will be remembered for its significant divisions in the gaming world, with standout triumphs including Black Myth: Wukong, Warhammer 40K, and Final Fantasy Rebirth, but also notable failures like Unknown 9: Awakening.

In summary, most of these games are designed for solo play or lack a competitive structure similar to esports. Contrastingly, esports is consistently expanding and showing a significant increase in its projected global earnings.

2024 marks a monumental year for the world of esports, with the inaugural Esports World Cup taking place in Riyadh back in July. Pioneering players such as Faker are still making history, while an increasing variety of esports games cater to a growing number of gamers worldwide, ensuring that the popularity and reach of esports continues to expand.

If you are a massive fan of the biggest esports titles such as Dota 2, League of Legends, and many others, we’ve collated 2024’s esports highlights from all your favorite esports titles as well as the upcoming tournaments you should never miss.

Counter-Strike 2

This year, teams NAVI, G2, and FaZe Clan have ruled the major CS2 competitions. From the PGL Major Copenhagen to the BLAST Premiere World Finals in Sentosa, Singapore, these three squads have been fiercely competing with Valve’s latest Counter-Strike 2. The Esports World Cup tournament for CS2 even crowned NAVI as the top team, awarding them a whopping grand prize of $400,000.

Some notable tournaments like the Intel Extreme Masters and ESL Pro League will be happening this year too, and their fresh seasons will kick off early in 2025.

Don’t worry if you think you’ve missed out on the CS2 esports event, as the Perfect World Shanghai Major is scheduled for November 30.

Prepare yourself for a continuous 15-day marathon of Counter-Strike 2! Hone your shooting skills and frag counts, as the competitions are bound to put you right back in the heat of battle.

Dota 2

Although Team Gaimin Gladiators usually outperformed them in most tournaments throughout 2023, Team Liquid astonished everyone by winning The International’s Aegis in Copenhagen last September instead.

In the year 2023, Team Liquid faced off against Gaimin Gladiators in a series of five nail-biting grand finals matches. Despite their losses, these defeats made their eventual victory even more significant. The triumphant team ultimately pocketed an impressive $1,249,445 grand prize after decisively beating Gaiming Gladiators with a 3-0 sweep in the final showdown.

In contrast to their impressive performance last year with Gaimin Gladiators leading the pack, it’s been a different story this season as Team Falcons has emerged victorious in the majority of Dota 2 professional tournaments. They even clinched the title at ESL One Birmingham back in April.

3 significant Dota 2 competitions remain for this year: DreamLeague Season 24, Blast Slam 1, and ESL One Bangkok. This year’s Dota 2 tournaments are particularly exciting as a new hero named Kez has been introduced and the final act of Crownfall has been released.

League of Legends

As an ardent fan, I can’t help but marvel at the grandeur of the League of Legends World Championship, the pinnacle of our beloved game. This prestigious event unfolds in various significant cities around the globe, underscoring its massive scale and international appeal.

Besides triumphing in significant qualifying events, teams can also secure their spot at the World Championship by emerging victorious in regional finals. Last September, T1 successfully clinched a place at the World Championship by winning the League of Legends Champions Korea regionals.

2021’s World Championship holds a historic significance like any other, but what sets it apart is the triumph of T1 and Faker who have secured their fifth championship title. In addition to claiming the prestigious Worlds trophy, they pocketed a grand prize worth $445,000.

2025 should be a year when other teams rise to the challenge, as it’s clear that the current team has held the upper hand for quite some time and has consistently demonstrated remarkable prowess.

VALORANT

The competitive side of VALORANT primarily centers on the VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT), organized by Riot Games. Each regional area conducts its own VCT tournament stage, culminating in the Valorant Champions 2024 event.

Team Sentinels won the VCT Masters Madrid and Gen.G Esports became the champions of VCT Masters Shanghai. While both teams were dominating this year with major wins, Team EDWard Gaming became the victor of the ultimate VALORANT Champions 2024, with a grand prize of $1,000,000.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to announce that the VALORANT Game Changers Championship 2024 is underway from November 8th through November 17th, 2024! Don’t let this chance slip by – witness your beloved VALORANT teams go head-to-head in this year’s grand finale tournament. Let’s cheer them on together!

Tekken 8, Street Fighter, and Major Fighting Games

Every significant fighting game boasts its standalone competition yet contributes to a broader professional circuit. Events like the EVO Championship Series, Esports World Cup, and Ultimate Fighting Arena feature distinct competitions centered around various fighting game franchises.

This year, some significant victories in the fighting game genre can be attributed to these tournaments and competitors.

  • Esports World Cup 2024: Each champion wins $300,000
    • Street Fighter 6: Xiao Hai
    • Tekken 8: ULSAN
  • EVO Championship Series 2024: The championship grand prize varies from each title
    • King Of Fighters VX: Xiao Hai with $12,000
    • Tekken 8: Arlan Ash with $18,604
    • Mortal Kombat 1: SonicFox with $12,000
    • Street Fighter 6: Punk with $21,116

As we’re just two months away from wrapping up 2024, the fighting game esports scene is still buzzing with excitement for both dedicated players and enthusiasts like myself. The Tekken World Tour Finals 2024, boasting a whopping $300,000 prize pool, will take place in Tokyo from December 5 to December 8, promising high-stakes action. Meanwhile, the SNK Championship Series 2024 Finals will culminate on December 1 with a prize pool of $42,080. I can hardly wait!

2024 has been an exhilarating year for the esports community, packed with numerous events, and the excitement doesn’t seem to be slowing down as we approach the end of the year. Even as gaming giants like Nintendo and Sony unveil groundbreaking announcements such as the Switch 2’s backward compatibility and the release of PS5 Pro, us esports enthusiasts have plenty more reasons to cheer for our favorite games in the upcoming tournaments next year!
