Esta TerBlanche, ‘All My Children’ Star, Dies at 51

As a gamer and a huge fan of daytime soap operas, I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Esta TerBlanche. Her role as Gillian Andrassy on “All My Children” was one that I always looked forward to watching every day. The way she brought her character to life, with her grace and charm, made her a fan favorite.

The beloved soap opera actress, Esti TerBlanche, who gained fame for portraying Gillian Andrassy on “All My Children,” passed away at the age of 51.

TerBlanche passed away on Thursday due to natural reasons, according to her friend and representative Lisa Rodrigo’s Facebook post. An autopsy report is yet to be released. Rodrigo expressed her shock and sadness, stating, “Esta was a radiant soul inside and out. I felt privileged to have known and collaborated with her.”

TerBlanche was born in Rustenberg, South Africa, in 1973. She gained recognition in her native land when she won the Miss Teen South Africa title in 1991. Following this success, she transitioned to television and made her first appearance on small screens with the South African soap “Egoli: Place of Gold,” which aired on M-Net from 1992 to 1995.

In the late 1990s, she emigrated to the United States and landed her most significant role yet when she joined ABC’s daytime soap opera “All My Children” as Gillian in 1997. During her time on the show, TerBlanche portrayed a Hungarian princess named Gillian who moved in with her cousin Dimitri, played by Michael Nader. On “All My Children,” TerBlanche shared a popular storyline with actor Cameron Mathison, whose character Ryan Lavery developed an enemies-to-lovers relationship with Gillian.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve always been intrigued by the captivating storylines of daytime soap operas like “All My Children.” However, even the most beloved characters sometimes have to take a leave of absence from their beloved shows. For instance, TerBlanche, who enjoyed immense popularity on the series, decided to step down in 2001. Her character met an untimely end, but Gillian’s presence was still felt sporadically – most memorably as a ghost and during the show’s final weeks on ABC. In her recent interview with “Soap Opera Digest,” TerBlanche shared that she chose to leave the production willingly, yearning to return home to South Africa.

At home, she established a spa and gained recognition through South African documentaries and television. Lately, she has been spending more time in the United States. When interviewed by Soap Opera Digest about returning to soap operas, she expressed her interest, stating, “I definitely would like to explore that possibility again.”

She is survived by her father and her sister.
