Eternals’ Kit Harington Has A Funny Explanation For Why He Signed Onto The Superhero Flick

As a seasoned gamer of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) games, I must admit that my journey through this superhero saga has been filled with both triumphs and tribulations. The latest addition to the franchise, Deadpool 3, is undoubtedly a blockbuster hit, but let’s not forget about the flops that have graced our screens in recent years, such as Chloé Zhao’s Eternals.

At this stage, the Marvel Cinematic Universe runs smoothly, consistently expanding on screens, both in theaters and with a Disney+ subscription. Fans are ecstatic about the box office triumph of Deadpool 3, but those who have followed the Marvel films sequentially for years know that there have been some misfires recently. One of the main disappointments is Chloé Zhao’s Eternals, which fell flat with both critics and viewers. Kit Harington, famously known from Game of Thrones, made his MCU debut in this unsuccessful production, and he has a humorous reason for why he agreed to be part of the superhero film.

In the star-studded lineup of “Eternals”, Kit Harington played a lesser character named Dane Whitman. Though the film’s post-credits scene hinted at significant developments for his character, so far, we haven’t witnessed his reappearance in the Marvel universe. It remains uncertain if he’ll resurface in any future Marvel productions, but Harington has shared insights about securing the role. In an interview with GQ, he discussed his reasons for accepting the part.

As a seasoned actor with years of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that I wouldn’t feign taking on that [role] simply because it was unique and captivating. If Marvel comes knocking at my door, well, you bet your boots I’d jump at the opportunity. The thrill of being part of such a beloved franchise is too enticing to resist!

As a long-time fan of both “Game of Thrones” and Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I can understand why Kit Harington chose to join the MCU with “Eternals.” Coming off the controversial ending of “Game of Thrones,” it’s not surprising that he would want a fresh start, especially with a company as powerful and influential as Disney. The idea of playing Dane Whitman, who transforms into Black Knight, is an exciting opportunity for Harington to explore a new character while possibly drawing parallels between Jon Snow’s sword-wielding style in Westeros and the Black Knight’s fighting techniques in the MCU.

Although Eternals has been successful at the box office, there’s no clear sign yet that the characters or story will continue in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In fact, Kevin Feige, the head of the MCU, has denied the possibility of an Eternals sequel, which is disappointing given the numerous plot threads left open during its credit scenes. However, it’s expected that upcoming movie Captain America: Brave New World will delve into the resolution of Eternals‘ ending, particularly the fate of the Celestial Tiamut.

If “Eternals” doesn’t have its own solo film, Kit Harington could potentially rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe through the upcoming “Blade” movie. This is hinted at by the voiceover of Mahershala Ali’s Blade character in the “Eternals” end credits scene featuring Dane. The connection between these two characters has piqued fans’ interest and they are eager to see their interaction on the big screen.

Currently, there are no plans for “Eternals 2” and “Blade” is facing numerous setbacks, leaving uncertain if or when Kit Harington will reappear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, it appears that he’s content with having taken on the role in the first place.

Upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, “Captain America: A New World Order,” will be released in theaters on Valentine’s Day, February 14th. In the interim, take a look at the scheduled release dates for movies in 2025.
