As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the intricate worlds of television series, I must admit that the news of Storm Reid’s departure from Euphoria left me feeling a tad melancholic. The character of Gia Bennett was a beacon of hope and resilience amidst the tumultuous lives of the characters in East Highland, California. Her absence will undoubtedly leave a void that may never truly be filled.
Regrettably, Storm Reid has confirmed that she won’t play Gia Bennett again when Season 3 of Euphoria resumes production in 2025. Unfortunately, Rue’s (Zendaya) younger sister won’t be coming back to East Highland, California for the next season of the HBO series.
The actor who played in both “The Last of Us” and “A Wrinkle in Time” made an announcement during their attendance at the Governors Awards held on November 17th. According to Rotten Tomatoes, this is what Reid stated:
I’m thrilled about Season 3, but it’s disappointing that Gia won’t be there. However, I owe a great debt to the cast, crew, and HBO for creating such an extraordinary show as Euphoria. It’s truly unique, and I feel fortunate to have been associated with something so culturally significant. I can hardly wait to see what Season 3 has up its sleeve!
From the start of the series “Euphoria” back in 2019, Reid played an essential role within the cast. Sadly, Gia was compelled to deal with her sister Rue’s substance abuse issues in a heart-wrenching manner that no teenager should experience. This burden fell upon her shoulders, as it was she who discovered Rue after her near-fatal overdose.
In Seasons 1 and 2, Gia acted as a supportive and rational influence for Rue, but it became apparent that even Rue might make questionable choices if not for the guidance of her older sister. Regrettably, there has been no clarification from Reid on whether Gia will be absent from future seasons of Euphoria, or if this decision was made by the series creator Sam Levinson himself.
In a chat with Variety, Colman Domingo has shared that he will be back for Season 3 of Euphoria. Known for his Emmy-winning performance as Ali, a recovering addict and Rue’s sponsor in recovery, Domingo also garnered acclaim for his role in the prison drama Sing Sing. In this interview, he hinted at resuming his character from Euphoria for the next season, although he appeared uncertain about the January 2025 start date for filming.
It seems like I’m set to return for Season 3, but I don’t have any specific details about the scripts or the production timeline yet. I’ve only heard rumors that it might start in January, just as you have. However, if what I’ve heard is true – and ‘allegedly’ is a good term to use here – Ali will be back too. So we’ll see what happens.
‘Euphoria’ Will Return, but Without Key Characters
In early November, HBO put an end to the persistent rumors about canceling “Euphoria.” Regrettably, fans won’t get to witness more escapades involving either Gia Bennett (Reid) or Fez (Angus Cloud) when Season 3 premieres. However, as confirmed by Storm, she won’t be reprising her role, and sadly, Angus Cloud passed away in July 2023 at the tender age of 25.
Indeed, I’m thrilled to learn that Sydney Sweeney will reprise her role as the beloved character, Cassie Howard. While Cassie didn’t have as many interactions with Gia or Fez on the show, off-screen, Sweeney shared a heartfelt account about the cast grappling with the tragic demise of their colleague, Cloud. As reported in Glamour, she openly discussed this emotional journey.
[We] were constantly on the phone with each other crying, because it was just such a shock.
Sweeney and her fellow cast members have been grappling with the reality that it’s been close to three years since Season 2’s finale, which aired in February 2022. In an interview with Cosmopolitan, the actress discussed adapting to the normal progression of time and even hinted at a time leap for the show, Euphoria. Sweeney specifically stated:
There was quite a gap between season one and two, and with the recent time leap, it’s a fresh journey for me. I’m essentially learning on the job and staying adaptable for whatever’s ahead. However, I must admit I’m quite enthusiastic about it. I have a soft spot for Cassie; she’s always an exhilarating character to portray, so I can’t wait to see where her story leads.
The filming for Euphoria Season 3 is planned to start in January 2025. Although Storm Reid and Angus Cloud won’t be there, Sydney Sweeney can’t wait to return as beloved character Cassie Howard. “Cassie has been the longest role I’ve ever played,” Sweeney shared with Vanity Fair. “She holds a unique spot in my heart, so I know I’ll easily slip back into it.”
