As a seasoned gamer with years of immersive storytelling under my belt, I can wholeheartedly appreciate the journey and vision that Eva Longoria and her team at Hyphenate Media Group are embarking on. Having been an actress myself, I understand the desire to break free from the confines of a single role and explore the vast landscape of creative expression.
Eva Longoria wants people to know she’s much more than an actress.
As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: Yesterday, I sat down with my business partner, Cris Abrego, at Content London to discuss our media production company, Hyphenate Media Group – the team behind shows like “Ready for Love,” “Telenovela,” and “Grand Hotel.” We talked about how we aim to help creators build their own entrepreneurial ventures.
As a versatile individual, I share this trait with Abrego. I grew tired of merely reciting lines from a script and yearned for more. Beyond being an actress, I’m also a producer, director, philanthropist, entrepreneur. We both recognized that Hollywood doesn’t fully support our multi-faceted roles. It often encourages you to stick to one lane – ‘you’re an actress, not a producer.’ Let’s create something innovative that challenges the status quo in the industry.
CEO Abrego agreed, stating, “In reality, this isn’t suitable for everyone, but there are those who are extremely driven and ambitious. Not only do they wish to sell various projects in diverse formats, but they also desire to pen plays and limited series.
At a recent gathering, television powerhouse Gloria Calderón Kellett (known for her work on ‘How I Met Your Mother’ and ‘Jane the Virgin’), who was recently named as the first creator partner by the company, was present to elaborate on the partnership and future plans for GloNation Studios. In explaining her role upon joining forces with Cris and Eva, she stated that her primary task is to establish a strong foundation to expand Glo’s business and other acquisitions, while simultaneously growing the Hyphenate slate and the Hyphenate Original slate as well.
Kellett discussed the transformation within the industry: “Back in 2016 or 2017, if you managed to become a showrunner, you had the ability to directly produce your episodes, similar to how writers on staff would create their TV episodes. In my case, I had worked on numerous TV episodes before I became a showrunner.” However, she noted, “this practice is no longer commonplace. Nowadays, writers are hired and work in isolation, and only after the writing process is complete do executive producers visit the set.
Mentorship plays a crucial role too. We’re constructing the future generation of showrunners and content creators, as we have successfully done so before.
The company aims to initiate business ventures in France, shifting its focus from primarily English and Spanish-speaking projects it has pursued since its inception. Longoria explained their approach thus far: “We are a company guided by showrunners and talent. If someone is deeply invested in a narrative or project, we offer a welcoming environment for them. Moreover, we’re also driven by intellectual properties. Our book scouts are exceptional, and we have strong partnerships with agencies that suggest potential books to us.
During the conversation, there certainly came a point where the topic of “Desperate Housewives” arose – “I’d be more than happy to join if it ever comes back,” she enthusiastically expressed, reminiscing about Gaby.
