Evan Rachel Wood Says She Isn’t Returning for ‘Practical Magic 2’: “I Was Told They Are Recasting”

Although some actors from the original “Practical Magic” movie will be reprising their roles for the sequel, it’s been clarified that Evan Rachel Wood won’t be part of it.

As a dedicated gamer, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement on Friday when I heard the news about Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing reprising their roles as the Owens aunts in our favorite game. The question on everyone’s mind was whether Wood would make a comeback too. But, just like in real life, we don’t always get immediate answers. That day, the actress herself hopped onto Instagram Stories to clear the air and answer our burning questions.

Wood clarified that he wasn’t approached for a role in the Practical Magic sequel. Despite offering to make a brief appearance, even with just one scene or line, he was informed they were recasting. He regrets not being able to rejoin his on-screen sisters and it was beyond his control.

The Hollywood Reporter reached out to Wood’s reps for additional comment.

In the 1998 movie “Practical Magic,” Sandra Bullock portrayed Sally Owens’ eldest child, Kylie. Raised by their aunts, Jet (Wiest) and Franny (Channing), after their parents pass away, these aunts impart to Sally and her sister Gillian (Nicole Kidman) the art of magic.

Previously, it had been announced that Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman would be returning to their roles for the sequel. Recently, several new cast members have been added: Joey King from “Bullet Train”, Lee Pace from “Bodies Bodies Bodies”, Maisie Williams known for her work on “Game of Thrones”, Xolo Maridueña starring in “Cobra Kai”, and Solly McLeod from “The Dead Don’t Hurt”. This upcoming movie is helmed by Susanne Bier, director of “The Perfect Couple”, “Bird Box”, and “In a Better World”. The screenplay for this film was co-written by Akiva Goldsman, who also collaborated on the original script, along with Georgia Pritchett from “Succession”.

Filming for the movie is happening right now. The sequel to Practical Magic, titled Practical Magic 2, is scheduled to hit theaters on September 18, 2026.
