As a cinephile who has spent countless hours hunched over reels and reels of celluloid, I must say that the beginning of 2025 hasn’t been particularly movie-rich for AMC+ subscribers, but fear not, dear fellow film enthusiasts! Despite the lean pickings following the holiday glut, there are still a couple of gems to keep us entertained.
2025 has had a rather leisurely beginning for cinema enthusiasts who are members of AMC+. To be fair, the streaming platform has only added two new movies in January, but considering we’re still recovering from the holiday whirlwind, it’s easy to miss this minor offering. However, fear not! There are two captivating films for you to enjoy: “Skincare,” led by the talented Elizabeth Banks, and the current frontrunner for the 2025 Oscars in the Best Animated Feature category, “Memoir of a Snail.
As a movie enthusiast craving more magical tales, I’d like to share some exciting news! To complement the upcoming release of Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches Season 2, AMC+ is rolling out a special showcase titled “Wicked: Tales of Magic and Mystery.” This event will shine a light on every enchanting title available on both AMC+ and Shudder, giving us all more reasons to indulge in the captivating world of witches.

In the narrative of ‘Skincare’, Hope (portrayed by Elizabeth Banks), a skincare specialist, eagerly anticipates the launch of her boutique to escalate her career. However, just after the grand opening, a rival business owner, Angel Vergara (Luis Gerardo Méndez), sets up shop right opposite hers. A string of unsettling occurrences soon follows, leading Hope to suspect foul play. In a bid to uncover the culprit targeting her business, she forms an alliance with Jordan (Lewis Pullman). This film is inspired by the tale of celebrity facialist Dawn DaLuise, with Banks taking on both acting and executive producing roles in this production.
As a movie critic, I must say that Elizabeth Banks’ commitment to bringing “Skincare” to life is palpable. Her portrayal of Hope, a character brimming with wit and depth, marks one of her finest performances yet. This film also serves as a sharp critique of the ruthless beauty industry in Hollywood, striking a chord with viewers. The dark humor is spot-on, and the cinematography captures the glamour of the world it portrays beautifully. Debut director Austin Peters delivers an impressive feature film debut with “Skincare.” Mark your calendars, as you can stream it on AMC+ starting January 3.

In this rephrased version, the title is “The Tale of a Snail: A Life in Sorrow,” and it narrates Grace’s journey growing up with an alcoholic father and her brother Gilbert. After their father’s demise, they are separated and raised by different families. As she matures, Grace battles mental health challenges and the pain of family separation, only to be hit by one misfortune after another. Eventually, she finds the courage to chase her dreams. Director Adam Elliot chose stop-motion animation to bring this bittersweet coming-of-age narrative to life.
While telling a rather somber story, Memoir of a Snail also touches on the strength of the human spirit to overcome adversity. Still, this is a mature-animated feature that tackles many complex themes with a clever script and meticulously crafted visual style. The movie has been a resounding success, gaining early Oscar buzz and landing 94% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie is also backed by excellent voice acting, with Sarah Snook delivering multiple gut-punches as she navigates the world as Grace. Memoir of a Snail will be available to stream on AMC+ on January 17.

The Smiths yearned for a peaceful family getaway, so they opted for a trip to the secluded Swedish island Svälta to experience the local Karantan festival. They booked an Airbnb, but found the owner somewhat eerie, initially choosing to dismiss it and attempt to adjust to the small town. However, it becomes apparent that their host and several locals conceal a grim past linked to a 19th-century epidemic and acts of cannibalism. The Smiths must put aside their disagreements and unite as a family to survive this lethal vacation.
Recently, Nick Frost has been shining in horror movies, with standout performances in the gruesomely twisted adaptation of ’90s sitcoms titled “Krazy House” and the nerve-wracking “Black Cab”. The latest addition to this list is “Get Away”, which makes it his third horror film this year. This movie gradually escalates into a frenzied finale, boasting excellent acting all around. The dark humor is also spot on, resulting in an enjoyable and amusing journey from beginning to end. “Get Away” will be streaming on Shudder starting January 10.
