In Monster Hunter Wilds, an assortment of distinct weapons await your selection. Each weapon has its own characteristics, but all prove effective in battles. With practice and skill development, you’ll find it straightforward to pursue and conquer even the most formidable creatures.
In many cases, the weapons in this game are designed for close combat, but there are some ranged options too, especially for those who prefer to keep their distance from monsters and dish out steady damage as Hunters. Choosing the perfect weapon can be tough, but this guide will make it easier for you to select the ideal one.
Light Bowgun
The Light Bowgun emphasizes maneuverability, offering numerous types of ammunition for tackling various kinds of adversaries. Unlike other weapons, it doesn’t provide a guarding mechanism, so you’ll need to dodge to avoid attacks. Moving and attacking the enemy helps build up your rapid-fire meter.
During battle, there’s an option to enter a fast-shooting mode where you can rapidly discharge bullets, but keep in mind that doing so will deplete your gauge. This rapid-fire can be beneficial when injuring opponents. But once an injury has occurred, consider using the special ammunition to aim and eliminate these injuries.
As a player, I find myself spinning the ammo wheel to choose my preferred type. Occasionally, certain ammunition types come in handy for causing unique effects, like the Paralyzing Bullets that leave enemies immobilized.
If you exhaust your unique ammunition supply, you’ll need to be patient until it refills naturally. However, you can hasten this process by firing ordinary rounds at the adversary, which also contributes to wounding them.
Additionally, while crafting or enhancing the Light Bowgun at the blacksmith, you’ll find out what specific ammunition it will utilize.
Heavy Bowgun

The Heavy Bowgun features a compact shield at its front, useful for deflecting minor assaults. However, due to its size and weight, maneuverability is somewhat limited when wielded, which can make it challenging to evade widespread powerful attacks that span a broad area. In those instances, you’ll need to quickly stow your weapon and sprint away from the attack’s impact zone.
Just like the Light Bowgun, the Heavy Bowgun offers a range of ammunition options and includes unique ammo that regenerates naturally over time. In addition, you will need to utilize this special ammo to eliminate open wounds, and if it runs out, you’ll have to wait for it to recharge.
During your downtime in the tent, you can create unique varieties of ammunition that have a finite supply, like the Freeze Bullets, using resources you find scattered throughout the open world. The regular ammo, however, is constantly replenished.
You’ll find various kinds of ammunition suitable for finites available for purchase at the Provisions Stockpile store, located within the base camp.
The Heavy Bowgun offers a fast-firing mode that builds up power gradually, allowing you to fire multiple bullets at once and reload swiftly. Additionally, this weapon has a unique ammo attack that embeds the shot into the ground, functioning as a mine which detonates when a monster steps on it.
In addition, you’re able to personalize your Heavy Bowgun during tent breaks. Customizing your bowgun gives you the option to use varying types of ammo boosters, improving the potency of your ammunition. You can also swap out different mods, influencing specific abilities of your weapon.

For instance, if you add the Ignition Mod upgrade to your customization, it will boost the rate at which your rapid-fire mode charges up. Similarly, you can alter your special ammo abilities, like using a stronger single-shot bullet instead of the standard Wyvernblast special ammo attack that deals moderate damage over a wide area.
Bow

Unlike a Bowgun, which fires bullets, a Bow is equipped with standard arrows. This versatile ranged weapon grants you the freedom to move around even while it’s drawn in your hand. There are two types of coatings available for a bow: the power-enhancing coating and the exhaust coating.
The slight enhancement in power coating amplifies your damage discharge, whereas the exhaust coating swiftly confuses monsters. Consistently inflicting wounds with regular shots can be tough, even when you persistently aim at the same spot. But that’s where the Tracer arrow becomes handy.
Firing standard arrows at adversaries gradually fills your Tracer meter. Once the Tracer meter is completely filled, you can unleash up to three Tracer bolts. These special arrows adhere to specific parts of the monster; once attached, they detonate after a brief period.

If a wound is present or if the monster carries Tracer arrows, you can employ the Focus Fire: Hailstorm assault. With this attack, a broad crosshair emerges, zeroing in on any existing wounds or Tracer arrows affixed to the monster. Subsequently, numerous arrows are discharged at each location, simultaneously destroying both the injuries and the arrows.
Additionally, the Bow has special attacks not found elsewhere, like the arc shot that lets you fire a series of Tracking Arrows at a designated spot after being charged. This move is tricky against agile opponents, but if it hits, follow up with the Hailstorm attack to lock on to the arrows adhered to the monster and inflict substantial damage.
The Best Ranged Weapon Type

Even though the choices might be limited within the class of ranged weapons, you can effortlessly select the one that aligns perfectly with your preferences. If you’re drawn to agility and a hint of strategic play, you’ll find immense enjoyment in wielding the Bow.
However, the Light Bowgun is the perfect choice if you prefer mobility and damage.
Instead, if you’re swift-fingered and aiming for high damage head-on, the Heavy Bowgun might be your perfect fit.
The optimal ranged weapon for you is likely the one that aligns most closely with your personal taste, and the game offers ample options to help you make an informed decision.
