Every Summer After

Each summer, I find myself immersed in a few heartwarming romances bearing “summer” in their titles, and for the past two summers, this tradition has led me to the enchanting works of Carley Fortune. This year, I decided to delve into her debut and critically acclaimed novel, “Every Summer After“, as its sequel, “One Golden Summer“, was recently released, and a film adaptation titled “Every Year After” is in the making. However, mere moments after concluding this captivating read, I learned of a significant creative change that leaves me with a whirlwind of feelings.

Currently, I’m thoroughly captivated by “Every Summer After”, and I’m eagerly anticipating its screen adaptation. The book follows Sam and Percy’s friendship, which unfolds from their initial meeting during their teenage years through to their encounter as adults. It’s filled with sunny vibes, high drama, intense romance, and moments that are simply enchanting. Therefore, the prospect of using an Amazon Prime subscription to witness this story play out in Barry’s Bay is truly exhilarating.

However, there’s been a shakeup behind the scenes that scares me a bit.

The leadership role for this project has shifted. Previously, Leila Gerstein, a producer on ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ and creator of ‘Hart of Dixie’ on The CW, was expected to lead the adaptation of Carley Fortune’s work. However, as per THR, it appears that she has departed due to creative disagreements.

This change in the showrunner on Fourth Wing seems a bit concerning. Such significant shifts often raise questions about possible conflicts and production issues happening off-screen. It might lead to delays in the show’s release, making us wait just a little bit longer to enjoy it.

In a similar vein to the “Fourth Wing” series, where a replacement was apparently ready to step in when the departure was announced, “Every Year After” has already welcomed a new showrunner.

According to the report, it’s Amy B. Harris who will be assuming control over the Carley Fortune adaptation. She has a multi-project agreement with Amazon MGM Studios and served as both showrunner and writer for their streaming series, The Wilds, which drew inspiration from Lost’s popularity. In addition, her writing and production work encompasses projects such as Gossip Girl, Sex and the City, The Comeback, and The Carrie Diaries. Moreover, she collaborated on the screenplay for the 2006 romantic comedy starring Lindsay Lohan, Just My Luck.

From the credits, it appears that Harris is an ideal choice for the adaptation of “Every Year After,” and I have confidence that she will skillfully and engagingly transform this popular romance novel into a compelling film.

So, while feeling a bit bummed that we took a step back with this series, I’m also hopeful.

Reflecting on my reading journey, both Every Summer After and One Golden Summer left a deep impression on me. Currently, the series is planned to adapt solely from the first book, which chronicles Sam and Percy’s relationship across their childhood. Their bond is tested by one regrettable action that keeps them apart for years, and eventually reunited through an unfortunate incident in their adulthood.

In the sequence of events, the story “One Golden Summer” unfolds subsequent to “Every Summer After“, focusing on Sam’s elder sibling, Charlie. Therefore, it would be ideal if the upcoming series encompasses both novels.

In a positive light, it’s reassuring that a new showrunner has been appointed for the upcoming year, and Amazon has demonstrated success in adapting books into shows. From recent adaptations like “We Were Liars” and “My Lady Jane,” to the popular “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” you can see their competence. Though change can be daunting, I believe this cherished Carley Fortune novel is in capable hands, and I eagerly anticipate our future journey to Barry’s Bay with Percy, Sam, and the rest of the crew.
