Every Superhero That’s Been Cast In James Gunn’s DCU So Far

As a longtime fan of comic book movies and TV shows, I must say that the upcoming DCU under James Gunn promises to be a fresh and exciting new chapter for these beloved characters. With his proven track record of creating engaging stories and memorable characters, I am confident that he will breathe new life into the DC Universe.

One character in particular that stands out is Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle. Having seen him bring Jaime Reyes to life on the big screen, I can attest to his talent and potential as a superhero. It’s a relief to know that he will continue playing the role in the DCU, and I am eagerly awaiting his future appearances.

On a lighter note, it seems that these superheroes have learned from their past mistakes (cough, cough DCEU) and are now taking the time to listen to the fans’ feedback. After all, if we didn’t voice our concerns about Blue Beetle’s fate, who knows where he would be now? Maybe he’d be stuck in a never-ending loop of reboots and disappointments! But alas, all is well in the DCU, and I can’t wait to see what other surprises they have in store for us.

It’s clear that the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) didn’t follow its intended path, prompting Warner Bros. to bring on board producer Peter Safran and director James Gunn as co-CEOs of DC Studios with a fresh perspective to reboot the franchise. By the end of 2024, the DC Universe (DCU) has been reshaped, starting with the animated “Creature Commandos” series setting the tone before the first glimpse of “Superman” unveiled an array of new superheroes and adversaries.

The initial lineup of DC films and shows was unveiled in January 2023, but the actors chosen for the main superheroes have been gradually emerging from Hollywood. Although most casting decisions are still kept under wraps, over a dozen talented actors have already been disclosed, providing a solid foundation for the DC Universe.

As a long-time comic book enthusiast and moviegoer, I am thrilled about the upcoming DC Universe (DCU) projects helmed by James Gunn. The “Superman” teaser has already introduced a host of superheroes and their respective actors, with more on the horizon as the franchise gears up for an action-packed future. Having grown up reading DC comics, I can’t help but feel nostalgic about seeing my favorite characters come to life on the big screen. The fact that we are now in 2025 and some of these heroes have already been cast is nothing short of amazing. I eagerly await the release of each project, knowing that the talented James Gunn will deliver a unique and captivating take on these iconic characters.

Superman – David Corenswet

In January of 2023, the initial announcement was made for DCU’s debut film titled “Superman: Legacy,” however, the term “Legacy” has since been removed from the title. It wasn’t until June 2023 that DC Studios disclosed any names associated with the project, but eventually, they declared David Corenswet as their new Superman, and Rachel Brosnahan was chosen to portray Lois Lane.

In less than ten years in Hollywood, Corenswet earned his role, debuting as an actor and producer in “Moe & Jerryweather” in 2014. His breakout performance was as River Barkley in “The Politician” in 2019. He’s also worked on films like “Twisters” in 2024, where he played Scott. Unlike some past Supermen, Corenswet bulked up to play the role without relying on a muscle suit under the blue, red, and yellow costume.

The initial response to the film’s first preview indicates that the actor is likely to give a stellar performance when the movie premieres, given his extensive preparation for the role over the years. Back in 2019, the actor confided in Entertainment Weekly that embodying Superman had been his long-held dream, and after landing the coveted role, he disclosed that he sought inspiration from Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s critically acclaimed “All-Star Superman” comic series to shape his portrayal of the character.

Mr. Terrific – Edi Gathegi

As a long-time fan of Superman and DC Comics, I have eagerly anticipated each new development regarding the upcoming film. Having grown up reading comics featuring characters like Mister Terrific, I am thrilled to see Edi Gathegi cast in this role. The announcement came not long after the initial leads for Superman were revealed, and it was a welcome surprise. Now that we have seen a teaser for the film, my excitement has grown even more, as there is much that can be gleaned from Edi’s portrayal of Mister Terrific. I am looking forward to seeing how this talented actor brings the character to life on the big screen and hope that the film will do justice to the rich history and legacy of DC Comics.

In 1942, the initial Mister Terrific made his first appearance, while the film version represents Michael Holt, who emerged in 1997’s “The Spectre” #54. Gathegi has expressed a deep commitment to his character as Mister Terrific, and he underwent intense training to embody him. The costume and distinctive T-shaped mask that he dons are directly inspired by the comics, resulting in an appearance strikingly faithful to the original source material, much like several characters in “Superman.

In the past, Gathegi has taken on the role of a superhero, as Armando Munoz (a.k.a Darwin) in “X-Men: First Class” from 2011. Apart from his appearances as a superhero, Gathegi is well-known for his parts in TV series like “House, M.D.” and the “Twilight” movie franchise. On Instagram, he expressed his gratitude towards James Gunn, who invited him to be part of an iconic franchise and contribute to its artistic dialogue.

Guy Gardner – Nathan Fillion

In July 2023, it was announced that Nathan Fillion would join Edi Gathegi in a project, with Fillion taking on the role of Guy Gardner, one of Earth’s Green Lanterns from the DC Universe. This character made a brief appearance in the “Superman” teaser, and yes, his infamous bowl cut is true to the comic version, though it may not be everyone’s cup of tea. First appearing in “Green Lantern” #59 in 1968, Guy Gardner is one of DC Comics’ most powerful Green Lanterns. He’s known for his self-centered nature and can be difficult to work with, but deep down, he’s a genuine superhero and an excellent fit for the DC Universe.

As a seasoned gamer, I’m no stranger to embodying comic book characters or teaming up with director James Gunn. Our shared history spans from “Super,” “The Suicide Squad,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” When I’m not donning a superhero suit on the big screen, you can find me making waves on the small screen, where I currently star as the main character in “The Rookie.” However, it’s my roles as Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds in “Firefly” and Richard Castle in “Castle” that most gamers recognize me by. Interestingly enough, I’ve also lent my voice to another Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, across numerous animated DC projects.

Hawkgirl – Isabela Merced

In July 2023, it was announced that DC’s character Hawkgirl would join Guy Gardner and Mister Terrific in a film, with Isabela Merced taking on the role. A glimpse of her can be seen in the “Superman” trailer, though her part in the movie remains uncertain. Hawkgirl is a complex character, as her story spans across multiple lifetimes, and Merced will portray Kendra Saunders, who debuted in 1999’s “JSA: Secret Files & Origins” #1. In this incarnation, the body of Kendra Saunders houses the spirit of the original Hawkgirl, Shiera Hall, but she retains her own mind and memories.

Merced made her debut in the film industry with the 2013 movie “The House That Jack Built.” Since then, she has been featured in various notable productions such as the criticized “Madame Web” by Sony and the more successful “Alien: Romulus.” Additionally, she occasionally acts on television, with her upcoming role being Dina in the second season of HBO’s “The Last of Us.

When Merced auditioned for “Superman”, she wasn’t familiar with the details of the project. Eventually, she managed to secure the role, which left her sobbing and prompted a quick phone call to her mother to share the joyous news. In interviews, she’s openly expressed her admiration for her character’s outfit, saying, “To be frank, I’m essentially a passionate enthusiast at heart. I feel like that’s my true self. Every time I put on the super suit, I get all excited! It’s absolutely thrilling to me.

Metamorpho – Anthony Carrigan

A day following the announcement of the Justice League cast members, DC Studios disclosed that Anthony Carrigan was chosen to portray Metamorpho in the upcoming Superman production. Carrigan, who’s been active in acting since the end of the 2000s, has previously worked on two DC productions: he played Mist in The Flash and Victor Zsasz in Gotham.

In 1965, Carrigan’s DC character debuted in “The Brave and the Bold” #57. This character, known as Metamorpho, is somewhat peculiar due to his unique abilities. Rex Mason, also called Metamorpho, can transform his body into various elements from the periodic table, often existing as a combination of four elements simultaneously, which gives him a distinct, fragmented appearance. His extraordinary powers make him an exceptional combatant, enabling him to mold his limbs into tools and weapons and withstand attacks that would be lethal to many others. However, only his face is glimpsed in the “Superman” teaser, leaving his role in the upcoming film uncertain.

Carrigan shares his eagerness about portraying Metamorpho, stating to Variety, “It’s definitely going to be quite a change. I can’t wait to stir things up. Noho Hank [his character in ‘Barry’] is such a unique personality, and I’m thrilled to embody someone entirely different and leave audiences guessing with my unrecognizable transformation.” Under all that makeup, he finds a hint of anonymity that he’s eager to delve into.

Supergirl – Milly Alcock

A widely recognized fact among Superman fans is that his cousin goes by the name Kara Zor-El, more famously known as Supergirl. This character made her debut in “Superman” #123, published in 1958, and has been a significant figure in DC’s comic books, films, television shows, and other media ever since. In January 2024, DC Studios declared that Milly Alcock, known for her role in “House of the Dragon”, will portray Supergirl within the DC Universe.

The main focus of the recent announcement is the standalone movie about Supergirl titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” set to release in 2026. This movie will detail the character’s origins on Krypton and her journey to Earth, offering a glimpse into her past. IMDb lists Lesley Alcock as also working on “Superman,” implying she may appear in that film too, although the initial teaser does not feature her.

In 2014, Alcock embarked on her professional acting journey, gaining recognition particularly for her portrayal of a young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s “House of the Dragon”. When it was announced that Alcock would play Supergirl, Melissa Benoist – who played the character on The CW’s “Supergirl” from 2015-2021 – offered her insights. Benoist told Screen Rant, “I believe any and every portrayal of this character is important due to what she symbolizes.” She added, “I feel that each version of her is beneficial for young girls to witness.

Hal Jordan – Kyle Chandler

In “Superman,” Guy Gardner is set to appear, but it’s important to note that he’s not the only Green Lantern in the DC Universe. The initial Silver Age Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, who was previously brought to life by Ryan Reynolds, has also been cast. Excitingly, DC Studios announced in September 2024 that Kyle Chandler had won the role of Hal Jordan.

As a devoted comics enthusiast, I can’t help but reminisce about Hal Jordan, who made his debut in 1959’s “Showcase” #22. Although he’s technically DC Comics’ second Green Lantern, with Alan Scott, the Golden Age character, holding the first position, it’s hard to ignore the impact that Jordan has had on the DC Universe. A former test pilot turned space cop, Jordan is a key player in the Justice League and other organizations within the DC realm.

Although Hal Jordan was rumored to make an appearance in the upcoming “Superman” film, it appears that he won’t be gracing our screens in the movie. Instead, the talented actor John Cena will bring the character to life in the forthcoming TV series “Lanterns.” This show promises to delve into a captivating Earth-based murder mystery set within the United States, making it an exciting addition to DC’s television lineup.

Since the 1980s, Chandler has been a mainstay in both movies and television, earning significant recognition through his roles in “Homefront” (2005), “King Kong,” and “Friday Night Lights.” However, his casting faced instant criticism from fans due to his age, as he was born in 1965. James Gunn addressed these concerns, stating that the narrative required a more mature, grounded, and experienced Jordan compared to the usual comic book depiction.

John Stewart – Aaron Pierre

In October 2024, it was announced that Aaron Pierre had been cast as John Stewart in the upcoming series “Lanterns.” Unlike Hal Jordan, this character is not anticipated to make an appearance in “Superman” or other productions before the premiere of the Green Lantern series, which is scheduled for 2026.

First introduced in “Green Lantern” #87 back in 1971, John Stewart has since become a mainstay across various games, cartoons, and comic books. Known for his strategic thinking and natural leadership skills, he stands out as an exceptional superhero. Since making his debut, he’s ranked among DC’s most beloved Green Lanterns and cherished African-American superheroes in the comic book world. For years, fans have yearned to see him brought to life on screen, and now, their wish is coming true, courtesy of James Gunn’s DCU.

Pierre is a fresh face in Hollywood, starting his acting journey in 2016. Apart from starring in the 2023 blockbuster movie “Rebel Ridge,” he gained significant recognition for portraying Dev-Em in “Krypton,” which means he’s already familiar with DC’s superhero universe before this new role. Speaking about his green-costumed superhero character, Pierre shared with ComicBook, “I aim to do my utmost to serve and respect and enhance, in any way I can, John Stewart and the Corps.

Lobo – Jason Momoa

On December 30, 2024, one of the most eagerly awaited announcements in DC film history was made: DC Studios confirmed that Jason Momoa would portray Lobo. For years, fans had been suggesting Momoa for the role of DC’s Main Man, but it seemed like a pipe dream when he secured the part of Aquaman in the DCEU. However, director James Gunn is undeterred by Momoa’s dual role in the DC universe and is making the actor’s — and many fans’ — dreams a reality.

Lobo is an unparalleled anti-hero, having eradicated his entire species, he stands accused of genocide, becoming the last known Czarnian. This immortal character managed to create such chaos in the afterlife that he was banished, a feat that only adds to his longevity. Although he frequently collaborates with DC’s heroes as well as engages in conflict with them, Lobo is a bounty hunter with a sour disposition who adores space dolphins. He has made numerous appearances in animated series and an abundance of comics since his introduction in “Omega Men” #3 in 1983.

In the upcoming series “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” Lobo will make an appearance, and Jason Momoa seems a fitting pick for this part. Given his career took off when he portrayed Khal Drogo in “Game of Thrones,” it’s worth noting that Momoa has been connected to comic book projects for quite some time now. Before landing the latest DC role, Momoa expressed excitement about playing Lobo, stating, “Lobo was always my favorite character from the comics, and I’ve always wanted to play him because, well, it feels like the perfect fit!

The Creature Commandos’ voice cast

In December 2024, the project that kick-started DCU was titled “Creature Commandos,” a lively animated series broadcast on Max. The initial season presents our main characters, who are mostly monstrous entities, all of whom were enlisted by Amanda Waller, portrayed by Viola Davis in a repeat performance from her role in “Suicide Squad.” This character is under the orders of General Rick Flag Sr., played by Frank Grillo. They are assigned to complete clandestine missions together.

The reviews for “Creature Commandos” have been outstanding, and it’s served as a strong introduction to the DC Universe. The series boasts a talented cast and carries the distinctive style typically found in a James Gunn production, given that he is both its creator and writer. Moreover, by reprising her role as Waller, Davis links the show to the DCU and makes her one of just a few actors who have portrayed their characters across Warner Bros.’ fresh cinematic universe and the DCEU.

Joining the team are Indira Varma as The Bride, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Sean Gunn playing both G.I. Robot and Weasel, Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky, and David Harbour portraying Frankenstein. While not traditional superheroes, the Creature Commandos are monstrous beings who fight against Nazis, aligning them with the heroes. Interestingly, Sean Gunn presented this series idea before he started co-managing DC Studios; when he took on his larger role, he gave his approval to the pitch himself.

Peacemaker – John Cena

Prior to the creation of the DC Universe (DCU), James Gunn started collaborating with DC in 2021 through “The Suicide Squad,” where John Cena made his debut as Peacemaker. The movie’s success and the adoration fans had for Cena’s character paved the way for the development of a “Peacemaker” series in 2022. However, there was uncertainty about whether Peacemaker would be involved with the DCU once it became established. Luckily, Gunn devised a solution, and Season 2 of “Peacemaker” will align with his storyline for the new universe.

Beyond keeping Cena as Peacemaker in future installments, Viola Davis is set to reprise her role as well, accompanied by another superhero who we’ll delve into soon. Gunn has further disclosed that “Peacemaker” Season 2 unfolds after the storyline of “Superman,” and the movie will influence the narrative seen on the TV series.

As a devoted gamer diving into the exciting world of DCEU, I’ve come to understand that not all aspects from the first season will carry over. Yet, as James Gunn clarified on Threads, the narrative threads concerning Peacemaker will stay consistent. The positive reception for “Peacemaker” has made it no surprise that another season is in the works, and the excitement among fans knowing this intriguing character continues to play a role in the new DCU is palpable.

Vigilante – Freddie Stroma

In “Peacemaker,” a number of characters struck a chord with viewers, so it seems plausible that many will transition into the DC Universe alongside John Cena. One character already confirmed is Freddie Stroma’s Vigilante, who, following Eagly, is Peacemaker’s closest friend and appears in every episode of the first season.

Since 2006, Stroma has been active in acting. Before putting on a mask, he played significant roles such as Cormac McLaggen in three “Harry Potter” movies and Prince Friedrich in “Bridgerton.” Later, when Chris Conrad left the show due to creative disagreements, Stroma stepped into his DC role. This change led him to re-shoot scenes for the first five episodes, replacing the work that Conrad had previously done.

In 2023, Gunn shared on X (previously known as Twitter) that “Yes, Freddie continues as Vigilante.” It’s not certain if he was discussing “Peacemaker” Season 2 or the DCU in general. However, since Gunn mentioned that the show’s second season links to other franchise projects, it appears that Stroma will persist for some time in the future.

Blue Beetle – Xolo Maridueña

In the world of DCEU films, only one lead actor has been confirmed to transition to the DC Universe. Xolo Maridueña played Jaime Reyes (Blue Beetle) in the 2023 movie named after the character. Despite being critically praised, the film didn’t rake in substantial profits. This could be because viewers suspected that the character wouldn’t progress further once James Gunn assumed control at DC Studios, as he might have other plans for Blue Beetle in the DC Universe.

Nevertheless, it turns out the fans were mistaken; within about a month of the movie’s premiere, Gunn confirmed on Twitter that “Xolo Maridueña will carry on playing Blue Beetle in the DCU.” This means that he is currently the only actor to take up a leading superhero role again in Warner Bros’ fresh superhero universe. While Jason Momoa and others are returning, it’s not as their original characters or in key roles for any announced films yet.

Currently, the Blue Beetle character is slated to appear in an unnamed animated series which is under development. Although it might take some time before we see it, fans can feel reassured that the storyline of this character continues, even as the DCEU transitioned into the DCU.
