As a long-time TV enthusiast and someone who’s seen more episodes than I’d care to admit, this lineup is a veritable feast for the eyes! From the chilling thrills of “Doppelgänger. The Double” to the nostalgic charm of Scooby-Doo marathon, there’s something for everyone in this September TV guide.
As a dedicated fan, I can assure you that even though House of the Dragon has wrapped up its second season, there’s no need to worry about running out of great shows to watch next month on the streaming service. Contrary to what some subscribers might think, the platform has some truly captivating series lined up for release in the coming weeks, which are definitely worth looking forward to. Although September may not boast an extensive array of new options, rest assured that there’s a wealth of high-quality programming waiting for us.
Excited about upcoming limited series and a new adult anime that promises to scare you senseless? These shows coming to Max are definitely worth keeping an eye on. However, it’s important to note that not all the series arriving next month will appeal to everyone. But for those who enjoy intricate storylines and compelling narratives, look no further than what Max has in store for September.
My Brilliant Friend (Season 4)
Stream on September 9
My Brilliant Friend is a heartfelt coming-of-age tale, set in Naples during post-World War II Italy, narrated by Elena Greco (Margherita Mazzucco), a woman reminiscing about her past growing up there. As an older woman residing in a book-laden home today, she chooses to pen her own life story.
Reflecting on her long-lost childhood companion, Lila (Gaia Girace), Elena narrates the story of the radiant acquaintance she made in primary school more than six decades ago who seemingly vanished without a hint many years later. Her confidante and occasionally adversary, Elena recounts her journey with Lila and endeavors to solve the enigma surrounding her extraordinary friend. A narrative that embodies friendship and affection, My Brilliant Friend is set to come back for its fourth and final season on Sept. 9.
The Penguin (Limited Series)
Stream on September 19
In the fresh eight-episode series based on the 2022 film “The Batman,” Colin Farrell once again plays Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin. Known as “The Penguin,” this show delves deeper into his world, set a week after the movie’s events. The storyline follows Penguin as he strives to take control of Gotham’s criminal underworld, now that Carmine Falcone has met his end at Batman’s hands. However, Penguin isn’t alone in trying to rule the city streets, as a power vacuum has been created. As Falcone’s former right-hand man, Penguin knows the ins and outs of Gotham’s criminal network. But claiming control won’t be a walk in the park.
Following Sofia (Cristin Milioti), Carmine’s daughter, being released from Arkham Asylum, it remains uncertain what the psychotic serial killer might do following her father’s demise. As her path crosses with that of Penguin, viewers can expect to delve into their intertwined histories and brutal pasts. In his pursuit of power and providing a comfortable life for his mother as she desires, Penguin must tactfully overcome his adversaries while instilling terror in the hearts of all Gotham citizens. The series boasts impressive performances by Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Michael Zegen, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, and Theo Rossi. Beginning on Sept. 19, you can catch the Penguin on your streaming service.
Uzumaki: Spiral Into Horror (Limited Series)
Stream on September 28
Drawing inspiration from Junji Ito’s chilling horror manga, “Uzumaki: Spiral Into Horror” unfolds as a gripping adult animation series that delves into a town’s descent into madness. In this four-episode limited run, we find ourselves in the tranquil and picturesque Japanese village of Kurouzu-cho. Among its residents are Kirie Goshima (Uki Satake) and Shuichi Saito (Shin’ichirô Miki), typical teenagers who, unbeknownst to them, are about to be thrust into a battle to save their town from impending doom. After Shuichi shares his father’s peculiar behavior and obsession with spirals, Kirie initially dismisses it as a joke. However, the gravity of the situation quickly becomes apparent.
As a series of unsettling events start to affect their community, Kirie and Shuichi can no longer ignore that the enigmatic “spiral curse” might be at the heart of it. As more and more people grow fascinated by spiral designs in nature, clothing, food, etc., these teenagers must figure out how to endure the nightmares arising around them and free their loved ones from the grip of this curse. With its chilling atmosphere, Uzumaki: Spiral Into Horror is helmed by director Hiroshi Nagahama, while renowned composer Colin Stetson has been tasked with crafting the anime’s spine-tingling music. Uzumaki: Spiral Into Horror will be available for streaming on Sept. 28.
