As a longtime fan of heartwarming Korean rom-coms and an avid subscriber to Paramount+, I can’t help but feel a wave of excitement washing over me as we approach September. The upcoming release of “Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale” starring Pyo Ye-jin and Lee Jun Young is just the ticket to keep my heart warm as the autumn breeze starts to creep in.
In September, Paramount+ might not be your first choice for fresh TV series, but it’s worth considering due to some unexpected gems. The standout attraction this month is undoubtedly the second season of “Tulsa King,” starring Sylvester Stallone in a crime drama/comedy that built quite a following with its addictive first season. For fans of ’80s hair metal, the documentary “Nöthin’ But a Good Time” provides an intriguing look at the stories behind the most popular bands of the era, not just for their music but also for their iconic hairstyles. If you’re in the mood for a light-hearted indulgence this month, don’t miss out on the new Korean romantic comedy, “Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale.”
Aside from the highlighted series, Paramount+ subscribers can anticipate several other shows this month. For family-friendly viewing, the 3D animated escapades of Dora continue with its second season premiering on September 13. While some critics were divided, the second season of Fraser will be up for streaming from September 19. Lastly, the Australian dramedy Colin From Accounting begins its second season on September 29. For those who have a SHOWTIME subscription alongside Paramount+, they can also eagerly await new seasons of established shows like The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Drew Barrymore Show, Survivor, and Let’s Make A Deal.
Tulsa King (Season 2)
Available September 15
Following the suspenseful ending of the initial season, as Dwight found himself deceived and left hanging with uncertainties surrounding his ties with Stacy and daughter Tina, there was a palpable eagerness for the arrival of the second season of Tulsa King. The upcoming season seems poised to continue from where it left off, exploring Dwight’s fresh financial woes and the looming danger posed by adversaries such as Chickie, the newly appointed leader of the Invernizzi family, who aims to assert control over Oklahoma’s criminal underworld.
The first season of Tulsa King, released in 2022, generated quite a buzz, often being praised as Sylvester Stallone’s best performance since Creed. Blending elements of crime, drama, and comedy, the series boasted an impressive cast, including Martin Starr and Andrea Savage, who stood out particularly. Many found it hard to resist watching, while some even labeled it a “guilty pleasure.” Some critics went as far as calling it a “soap opera for men.” With high expectations, Tulsa King Season 2 is the most eagerly awaited ongoing series. Stream Tulsa King Season 2 starting September 15.
Nöthin’ But a Good Time: The Uncensored Story of ’80s Hair Metal (Docuseries)
Available September 17
As a child of the ’80s, I vividly remember the electrifying energy that pulsed through the air during that era, and the three-part mini-series brings me right back to those days. This music docuseries takes an unfiltered peek behind the curtain into the ’80s hair metal scene, featuring interviews with some of the biggest bands like Poison, Ratt, Ozzy Osbourne, W.A.S.P., and Skid Row. It’s a thrilling journey through the neon-lit streets of rock and roll excess, where the glamor and wild parties were as much a part of the scene as the music itself.
Moving away from the heyday of ’80s hair metal might not attract as massive an audience as before, but the carefree, live-for-the-moment attitude associated with that time in music still holds a certain charm. This era saw bands rise to fame swiftly and struggle under the weight of success, like trying to trap lightning. Many legends of extravagant parties and excess have been passed down through this musical period, making it intriguing to see what untold stories the docuseries Nöthin’ But a Good Time: The Uncensored Story of ’80s Hair Metal will uncover. Streaming starts on September 17.
Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale (Premiere)
Available September 26
Shin Jae-rim often dreams about breaking free from her monotonous job and lonely existence, envisioning herself in a fairy tale where she’s a Cinderella character. As a social club manager, she starts yearning for a ‘prince charming,’ and she believes she finds him when she crosses paths with the cynical heir to a fortune, Moon Cha-min. Skeptical about love, Moon Cha-min initially keeps his distance and pushes back, but as they spend more time together and Jae-rim becomes more assertive, a delicate romance blossoms between these contrasting individuals.
As a dedicated fan of Korean romantic comedies, I can’t help but get excited about the upcoming series “Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale.” Having spent countless hours binge-watching these delightful productions, I have come to appreciate their familiar yet comforting formula. The blend of sharp comedy and heartwarming moments never fails to bring a smile to my face.
