‘Pop Culture Jeopardy’ – Season 1

Streaming December 4

It’s undeniable that a lot of people adore the game show “Jeopardy”. Even after more than six decades on television with over 40 seasons under its belt, this classic program continues to find innovative ways to stay current. The newest twist in this journey is set for December with the launch of “Pop Culture Jeopardy!”, a spin-off that will delve deep into popular culture. This offshoot will be helmed by “SNL” star Colin Jost, and it promises to test contestants’ knowledge on a wide range of topics such as “The Avengers”, internet memes, top Billboard singles, and everything else trendy in between.

As a movie critic, I’m here to share my thoughts on the upcoming show, “Pop Culture Jeopardy”. It’s not just a simple revamp, but a significant shift from the traditional format of “Jeopardy”. In this fresh take, teams of three will now battle it out, potentially adding an extra layer of confusion and excitement to the classic question-and-answer gameplay. The grand prize for winning teams is a substantial $300,000, and the first season will span across 40 episodes, with three new episodes airing each week. Starting Wednesday, December 4, you can catch all the action on Prime Video. Three new episodes every Wednesday – get ready to test your pop culture knowledge!

Glitter and Greed: The Lisa Frank Story

Streaming December 5

Back in the ’80s and ’90s, it’s likely that you owned something from the Lisa Frank collection. The upcoming four-part documentary series, titled “Glitter and Greed: The Lisa Frank Story“, will delve into the journey of Lisa Frank Inc., a company famous for producing school supplies and stickers, characterized by their vibrant colors and charming designs. However, much like its rapid ascent, the brand vanished almost as swiftly, due to internal struggles and the advent of a new technological era.

The upcoming series titled “Glitter and Greed” will delve deep into the history of Lisa Frank Inc., revealing the darker aspects hidden beneath the vibrant colors and sentimental nostalgia. This documentary includes fresh behind-the-scenes footage and discussions with former employees, journalists, and insiders. With its previous successful docuseries “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV”, Maxine Productions appears ready to bring another explosive expose that may cast a different light on our childhood memories. It’s quite likely that our perception of unicorns might never be the same again. “Glitter and Greed: The Lisa Frank Story” will be available for streaming on Prime Video starting Thursday, December 5.

The Sticky – Season 1

Streaming December 6

In a nutshell, “The Sticky” – a fresh series based on an extraordinary 2012 heist – sees character actress Margo Martindale (known as such from the show “BoJack Horseman”) take on the role of Ruth Landry, a middle-aged syrup farmer. Facing threats to her livelihood from bureaucratic figures, she finds herself entangled in criminal activities. She teams up with a Boston mobster, Chris Diamantopolous, and a French-Canadian security guard, Guillaume Cyr, to orchestrate a heist targeting Quebec’s vast maple syrup reserve, worth millions.

In real life, the heist saw over $18 million worth of syrup stolen from the national reserves, and the show promises to deliver a deft blend of comedy, drama, and suspense. Jamie Lee Curtis, an executive producer on the series, is also said to have a crucial guest role. It’s certainly an audacious premise for a show, but it’s also the kind that sounds just crazy enough to work. The Sticky Season 1 streams on Prime Video on Friday, December 6, with all six episodes immediately available.

Secret Level – Season 1

Streaming December 10

Over the past few years, video game adaptations have finally started to show signs of creative prowess (apart from the disappointing Borderlands), and now Amazon’s Prime Video is hoping to deliver numerous high-quality adaptations in a single series. Titled Secret Level, this adult-animated anthology series is the brainchild of Deadpool director Tim Miller, and each episode promises to be an independent tale taking place within the universe of a well-known video game franchise. Confirmed franchises for Secret Level include Pac-Man, Dungeons & Dragons, Armored Core, and several PlayStation exclusives.

This concept is incredibly intriguing, given it’s being produced by Miller’s Blur Studio, the same team behind the underappreciated animated anthology “Love, Death, and Robots”. The voice cast is already impressive, featuring veteran video game voice actors like Laura Bailey and Hollywood stars such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt, and Keanu Reeves. In short, it appears to be a delight for avid gamers and enthusiasts of mature animation. If the creativity matches the hype, it seems likely that “Secret Level” will appeal to both these groups. Starting on Tuesday, December 10, you can catch “Secret Level” streaming on Prime Video, with two new episodes released every Tuesday.

Beast Games – Season 1

Streaming December 19

Interestingly, it’s not just Pop Culture Jeopardy that will debut on Prime Video around the holiday season. Another competition series titled “Beast Games” is also set to premiere. This show is being spearheaded by Jimmy Donaldson, popularly known as “MrBeast,” who currently ranks as the most subscribed YouTube content creator globally. He’s even managed to secure Hans Zimmer for one of his stunt videos. In this new venture into television, MrBeast will serve as the host, overseeing a thousand contestants vying in a variety of physical, mental, and social challenges. The winner, after competing through these tests, will walk away with a grand prize of $5 million.

The TV series “Beast Games” is quite a thrilling prospect, but it has been under fire in recent times. Several individuals have alleged that Donaldson creates an unsafe work environment, and in September, no less than five contestants jointly filed a class-action lawsuit, claiming they were unfairly exploited. If you’re unfazed by such controversies and are eager for a rollercoaster of surprises each week, it seems like “Beast Games” is the kind of show that would appeal to you. Starting on Thursday, December 19, you can catch “Beast Games” streaming exclusively on Prime Video, with fresh episodes premiering every Thursday.
