As a TV enthusiast who has spent countless hours glued to my screen over the past few decades, I must say that the lineup for Prime Video in January 2025 is nothing short of spectacular! From the gritty drama of “The Rig” to the heartwarming comedy of “Harlem,” there’s something for everyone.
Amazon’s Prime Video has been consistently carving out a significant niche in the crowded streaming market for quite some time now. Featuring both acquired and original series such as “The Boys”, “Reacher”, “Jack Ryan”, “Fleabag” (and many more), there’s definitely content that appeals to every taste. With Prime Video’s TV show selection expanding even further in the upcoming year, it seems they are set to maintain their momentum. In order to stay competitive against streaming heavyweights like Netflix, Hulu, and Max, Amazon needs to keep adding fresh content at a rapid pace.
In January of 2025, viewers can look forward to a fresh series and some new seasons of previously beloved titles on Amazon Prime Video. Fans of genres such as dramas, comedies, and crime investigations will likely be thrilled by the early releases of the upcoming year. With more exciting premieres scheduled for February, it seems that 2025 is poised to bring another fantastic season to the streaming service. Here are the new shows making their debut on Amazon Prime Video in January 2025.
‘The Rig:’ Season 2
Coming to Prime Video on January 2
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that “The Rig,” a chilling British supernatural drama-thriller, is my current favorite. This captivating series was ingeniously created by David Macpherson and made its grand entrance on Prime Video in January 2023. Just a month after the riveting six-episode first season graced our screens, it was announced that “The Rig” would return for a second season. This groundbreaking series holds a unique place in history as the very first Prime Video original to be filmed entirely in Scotland.
The series focuses on a team working on an oil rig off the coast of Scotland in the North Sea. However, events take a mysterious and ominous turn when the rig is trapped due to a peculiar fog that disrupts all external communications. Not only are they isolated, but the fog also starts affecting crew members, making them display bizarre actions. Upon investigation, one of the scientists on board suggests that the spores in the fog have been tainted by an ancient parasite that was accidentally awakened from its slumber beneath the seabed.
The Rig boasts a captivating ensemble cast, such as Rose Mason, the company scientist (portrayed by Emily Hampshire), Magnus MacMillan, the crew leader (Iain Glen), and Fulmer Hamilton, the communications officer (Martin Compston). Catch up with this talented team and join them for Season 1 as we approach the new year. Starting January 2nd, 2025, you can stream Season 2 of The Rig on Prime Video.
‘On Call:’ Series Premiere
Coming to Prime Video on January 9
On Call,” an upcoming American police drama, is being developed by Tim Walsh and Elliot Wolf. This series consists of eight episodes, each approximately half an hour long. Originally slated for release on Amazon Freevee following its approval in April 2023, production encountered setbacks due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike.
The series will depict police officers from Long Beach’s law enforcement agency, as they attend to numerous emergency situations in the area. Concurrently, these officers grapple with their personal feelings following a tragic loss of a colleague and fellow officer. This includes both seasoned veterans and new recruits who face the ethical dilemmas that come with safeguarding and serving their communities.
In the series “On Call,” you’ll encounter a captivating ensemble of characters such as veteran training officer Traci Harmon (played by Troian Bellisario) and newcomer Alex Diaz (portrayed by Brandon Larracuente), along with numerous others. Starting from January 9, 2025, the first season of On Call will be available for streaming on Prime Video.
‘Harlem:’ Season 3
Coming to Prime Video on January 23
The comedy show titled “Harlem,” produced by Tracy Oliver, originally premiered on Prime Video in December 2021. It was well-received, leading to a second season release in February 2023. Now, it’s back for its third season, which came out in December 2023. Critics and viewers have praised the series, with nominations for its cast and direction at both the Black Reel Awards and the NAACP Image Awards.
This series focuses on four companions who cross paths at New York University during their time there, as they negotiate their thirties. Residing in Harlem, these friends strive to achieve harmony between their individual pursuits and professional commitments. Their bond is tested, even as they grapple with the intricacies of their respective careers. This touching comedy delves into the triumphs and tribulations of womanhood.
The characters in Harlem lean heavily towards women, with Meagan Good playing Camille Parks, Grace Byers as Quinn Joseph, Shoniqua Shandai as Angie Wilson, and Jerrie Johnson as Tye Reynolds. Additionally, Whoopi Goldberg appears regularly as Dr. Elise Pruitt. If you haven’t watched the first two seasons yet, now would be a good time to do so before the third season premieres on Prime Video on January 23, 2025.
