As a die-hard fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, I must say that the recent surge of new Lord of the Rings content has left me absolutely thrilled! Having grown up with the original trilogy and revisiting the tales countless times over the years, it feels like a dream come true to see these beloved stories being brought to life once more.
On December 13, 2024, Middle-earth’s cinematic dominance continued with the premiere of “The Lord of the Rings: The War for the Rohirrim“, reminding both new and longtime fans that there is still more to explore within J.R.R. Tolkien’s universe. While this animated film has garnered mixed reviews, the tale of Helm Hammerhand and the King of Rohan aims to expand upon the legendary LotR trilogy, which captivated audiences 20 years prior and left an indelible cultural impact.
In the wake of the release of “The War for Rohirrim,” at least two more “Lord of the Rings” films are planned, neatly aligning with Season 3 of Amazon Prime Video’s “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.” With so many pieces moving swiftly, pointing viewers towards the upcoming Middle-earth cinematic and television lineup post “The War for Rohirrim” will help ensure they don’t miss out on what to watch next.
The Lord of the Rings: The War for Rohirrim
Release Date: December 13, 2024
Kenji Kamiyama is the director of “The War for Rohirrim: The Lord of the Rings,” a fantasy animation film that debuted in cinemas on December 13, 2024. This movie is a prequel to Peter Jackson’s iconic trilogy, with events happening 183 years prior to those depicted in “The Two Towers,” which was released between 2001 and 2003. The film serves as a precursor to the original series, focusing on Helm Hammerhand (played by Brian Cox), the esteemed King of Rohan, who defends his realm against the encroaching Dunlendings.
From a devoted cinephile’s perspective, the central struggle intensifies as Lord Wulf of Rohan (Luca Pasqualino) orchestrates a cunning rebellion, driven by revenge for his father’s demise. Forced into this predicament, Helm and his realm are compelled to seek refuge within Hornburg, leading to an epic showdown aimed at controlling the region. As Wulf strives to claim the throne and lead Rohan, he finds himself guarding Hera (Gaia Wise), his cherished spouse, who harbors secret intentions and family obligations she must uphold to safeguard the kingdom’s future.
In the epic series “The War for Rohirrim “, we also have several new cast members such as Miranda Otto and Dominic Monaghan who were in the original LotR. Also joining them are Dooley, Benjamin Wainwright, Lorraine Ashbourne, Michael Wildman, Laurence Ubong Williams, and others.
Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum
Release Date: 2026
After “The War for Rohirrim”, your next journey to Middle-earth is titled “Lord of the Rings: The Pursuit of Gollum“. Known for his portrayal of Gollum numerous times across various Lord of the Rings media, Andy Serkis will both direct and star in this live-action extravaganza, produced by New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures. While specifics about the plot and a confirmed release date are yet to be revealed, the film is expected to hit theatres in 2026.
Peter Jackson is set to create “The Search for Gollum,” in collaboration with long-time franchise associates Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. Together, they penned the script alongside Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. Filming will once again take place in New Zealand, the same location where the original trilogy was shot approximately twenty years ago.
Although details about the plot are secret, Tolkien’s book portrays “The Hunt for Gollum” as an event happening in a section of the narrative not shown in the movie trilogy. As a result, it is generally assumed that the story unfolds during a time leap separating Bilbo’s birthday party from Frodo’s departure from the Shire.
It’s important to note that “The Hunt for Gollum” released in 2009 was a different film, not related to the one we are discussing. In this upcoming 2026 release, Andy Serkis gets a chance to showcase his acting and directing skills as he takes on the role of Gollum, which he has played at least eight times since the franchise began in 2001. It’s exciting to see how much creativity Serkis will bring to this project when “The Hunt for Gollum” premieres.
Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3
Release Date: TBD
After wrapping up Season 2 in October 2024, Amazon’s original live-action series “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” has been given a green light for Season 3. While no specific release date has been announced, considering that the production process for the first two seasons took two years, it is anticipated that Season 3 will drop in mid to late 2026. This would make it a fitting counterpart to “The Hunt for Gollum.
As a devoted film enthusiast, I’d excitedly share that for those yet to subscribe, “The Rings of Power” offers an intriguing exploration of Middle-earth’s history. Drawing inspiration from J.R.R. Tolkien’s prologues, side stories, and appendices found within “The Lord of the Rings” novel, this series unfolds a gripping narrative set during Middle-earth’s Second Age – a millennia prior to the events depicted in “The Hobbit.” The origin story delves into the creation of the enigmatic Rings of Power and the rise of the malevolent Dark Lord Sauron, as he amasses power to seize these rings for his own nefarious purposes.
As the Númenor kingdom faces danger, “The Rings of Power” pushes the Elf-Human alliance to its ultimate trial. At the end of Season 2, Sauron took over Eregion, leaving the Elves’ survival uncertain. By demolishing the cliffs surrounding their realm, the writers have kept viewers on tenterhooks, eagerly awaiting to see what unfolds next.
New Untitled Lord of the Rings Movie From Warner Bros. & New Line
Release Date: TBD
In 2022, Embracer Group obtained Middle-earth Enterprises through an agreement with New Line and Warner Bros., paving the way for several movies set within the Lord of the Rings world. These upcoming films include The War for Rohirrim and a previously mentioned title, The Hunt for Gollum. While details about the third film remain scarce, it is confirmed to be produced in Wellington, New Zealand. (Information sourced from RZN)
In May of 2024, Warner Bros. and New Line revealed plans to create two new movies based on The Lord of the Rings series, initially sharing details solely for The Hunt for Gollum. This is great news for fans of the franchise who haven’t had a live-action installment since 2014, as Gollum’s solo adventure won’t be the finale. As we all eagerly wait for additional information about the sequel to The Hunt for Gollum, it’s important to remember that in June of 2024, Sir Ian McKellen showed interest in reprising his role as the iconic Gandalf in future Lord of the Rings projects (as reported by 1news).
The Lord of the Rings: The War for Rohirrim is currently playing in theaters.
