Every Willem Dafoe Vampire Movie, Ranked

As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the dark, enchanting world of vampire films, I must say that these movies have a special place in my heart. From the original 1922 Nosferatu to the latest remake, each iteration offers a unique take on this timeless tale of seduction and terror.

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the cinematic gem that is Willem Dafoe. From his groundbreaking role in Oliver Stone’s Academy Award-winning film, “Platoon,” he’s consistently captivated audiences with performances that are nothing short of extraordinary. His extensive filmography speaks volumes about his talent and dedication to the craft. He’s graced the silver screen in blockbusters like the latest release, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” and 2002’s “Spider-Man.” Among these notable roles, his portrayal of the maniacal Green Goblin stands out as one of the greatest and most iconic villains in cinematic history.

Willem Dafoe has graced the screens of not just big-budget films like “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “American Psycho,” and others, but also smaller, cherished ones such as “The Boondock Saints” and “The Florida Project.” However, hidden amidst these numerous movies in his filmography are five vampire films. One of them is probably familiar to you: the much-awaited 2024 film, “Nosferatu“. How does this movie stack up against Dafoe’s other vampire roles? Let’s find out. Here are all 5 vampire movies starring Willem Dafoe, listed according to their Rotten Tomatoes ratings, including the recently released “Nosferatu“.

‘Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant’ (2009)

37%

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant is a film adaptation with some changes from the first trilogy in The Saga of Darren Shan, called either the Vampire Blood or the Cirque du Freak series. It tells the story of a teen who becomes a vampire and joins a traveling circus featuring odd and monster-like beings, known as Cirque du Freak. In this film, Dafoe portrays Gavner Purl, a strict vampire who looks down on humans.

An Unworthy Adaptation

The movie “Cirque du Freak” faced criticism, as evidenced by its 37% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It also struggled financially, leading Universal to abandon their plans for three upcoming sequels. Perhaps the film might have fared better if they had chosen a more appealing title, such as “Vampire Blood,” instead of “Cirque du Freak.

4
‘The Hunger’ (1983)

58%

Before his iconic part in “Platoon”, Willem Dafoe made an appearance in the 1983 film “The Hunger”. This film is based on Whitley Strieber’s novel of the same name, and it revolves around a love triangle involving a vampire couple and a human scientist who focuses on sleep and aging. Notable stars in this movie include Susan Sarandon as the human scientist and music legend David Bowie as a vampire.

A Small but Memorable Role in a Forgettable Movie

Dafoe made a short cameo in the movie, portraying a troublesome young man who annoyed Bowie’s character. Despite receiving unfavorable reviews and poor box office performance upon its release (scoring 58% on Rotten Tomatoes), The Hunger has since gained cult status. Warner Bros. is planning to create a remake, hoping for better success this time around.

3
‘Daybreakers’ (2010)

69%

The film titled “Daybreakers” offers an engaging blend of science fiction and horror elements. It delves into a unique take on a global pandemic scenario, where an infected vampire bat triggers a plague, turning most of humanity into vampires. In this future world dominated by vampires, the story unfolds around a corporation that is desperately seeking a replacement for human blood while simultaneously hunting down the dwindling number of remaining humans.

Overshadowed by ‘Twilight’

In the film “Daybreakers,” stars like Ethan Hawke and Sam Neil take on roles as vampires. Interestingly, Willem Dafoe is not portraying a vampire here. Instead, he plays a human who has been freed from his vampiric affliction and is spearheading a resistance of human survivors. The movie received generally positive reviews, earning a 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Unfortunately, due to the popularity of the “Twilight” vampire series, the film “Daybreakers” was largely ignored and overshadowed by other big releases such as “Avatar” and “Sherlock Holmes” featuring Robert Downey Jr., during its release period.

2
‘Shadow of the Vampire’ (2001)

82%

It’s worth noting that the film Shadow of the Vampire is connected to Nosferatu, as it depicts the creation process of the 1922 silent movie. The characters in this retelling include F. W. Murnau, portrayed by John Malkovich who was the actual director, and other real-life figures from the production. During the filming of Nosferatu, the cast and crew started to suspect that their lead actor, Max Schreck, might have been a real vampire. In the actual movie, Max Schreck played Count Orlok, but rest assured, he was not a vampire in real life. This is an entertaining, fictionalized account of the filming of Nosferatu.

An Academy Award-Nominated Performance

Max Schreck/Count Orlock is played here by Willem Dafoe. His performance was lauded by critics, earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. This was Dafoe’s second nomination in this category (the first being Platoon), though he wound up losing to Benicio del Toro’s role in Traffic.

Daniel Day-Lewis’ acting in the movie bore a striking resemblance to Schreck’s character from the first film, thanks in part to his exceptional makeup team whose work earned a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Makeup (but unfortunately lost to ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ starring Jim Carrey). ‘Shadow of the Vampire’ is often recognized as one of Day-Lewis’ finest films and performances, garnering an impressive 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

1
‘Nosferatu’ (2024)

90%

In 2024, we have a new adaptation titled “Nosferatu,” which is a fresh take on the 1922 silent movie of the same name, originally based on Bram Stocker’s “Dracula.” Despite being considered a replica in some circles, “Nosferatu” has carved its unique path in cinema for over a century. The 1922 version is acclaimed as a cinematic marvel and a significant influence on the horror genre and vampire subgenre. This 2024 remake appears to be following suit, generating much excitement and praise. At present, it’s garnering an impressive 90% approval rating among 124 critics on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting its seductive yet terrifying appeal. While honoring the original, it stands as a remarkable film in its own right, offering a contemporary reinterpretation of this timeless horror tale.

From Vampire to Hunter

In my humble opinion, “Nosferatu” is a chilling masterpiece penned and helmed by Robert Eggers, who has left an indelible mark in the realm of terror with movies such as “The Witch” and “The Lighthouse.” This time around, Eggers has assembled an all-star cast that includes Bill Skarsgård, known for his chilling roles, as the ominous Count Nosferatu. The ensemble also boasts Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Notably, Willem Dafoe lends his talents to Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz, a character akin to Van Helsing but uniquely original in this film. “Nosferatu” graced our screens on Christmas and is sure to cast a ghastly shadow over everyone’s holidays for the remainder of the year – and perhaps even longer.
