As a die-hard animation enthusiast with over two decades of watching Disney movies under my belt, I must say that the upcoming sequel to Moana has me absolutely thrilled! Growing up in the golden age of Disney animations, I’ve seen countless stories unfold on the big screen, but none quite like this Polynesian adventure.
Back in 2016, when the movie “Moana” initially released, it ignited the passion of Disney Animation fans with its distinctive narrative and fresh tunes. The tale, rooted in Polynesian mythology, about a young woman named Moana venturing across the sea to retrieve Maui, the demigod who had stolen the heart of Te Fiti, resonated universally. Moreover, the chemistry between Auli’i Cravalho’s character Moana and Dwayne Johnson’s Maui was entertaining, as both performers delivered impressive performances as this unlikely duo.
In the sequel to Moana, we find Moana embarking on a fresh journey, with the realm of the wayfinder now encompassing a multitude of new faces. Notably among them is her younger sister Simea (Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda), and a quartet of seafaring companions who join forces with her for this oceanic expedition. As Moana sets sail towards her upcoming adventure, fans of the initial film will recognize several familiar characters reappearing.
The Main Characters
The main characters of Moana 2 remain the same as those of the first movie: Moana and Maui.
Moana
Following her successful debut as Moana in the initial movie, Auli’i Cravalho is set to lend her voice once more to the character for Moana 2. In the 2016 production, she solved the mystery that Te Fiti, the deity she had vowed to revive, was actually Te Kã, a demon formed from lava. She successfully tamed Te Kã and restored her heart, reinstating her true form. Grateful for Moana’s actions, Te Fiti healed the afflicted region and Moana returned home as a celebrated hero.
Based on D23 updates, three years after the original movie, Moana will receive a summons from her ancestors to lift a curse that has caused division among the people of Oceania by locating a secret island. Accompanied by a fresh team this time, she’ll seek aid from her cherished demigod ally as well.
Maui
Dwayne Johnson was already a known figure when he lent his voice to Maui in the initial ‘Moana’. However, the movie expanded his fan base significantly, and he’s set to reprise his role as the demigod in the sequel. In the original movie, despite performing numerous good acts, which were highlighted in the song “You’re Welcome”, he also won the affection of Te Fiti and brought about the curse that led Moana to search for him.
In the sequel to Moana, Moana invites him back for another adventure. This time around, they hold each other in higher regard, but there may still be playful banter when the occasion arises. Notably, he’ll possess a magical hook in this story, granting him the ability to transform into various creatures like an eagle, shark, or lizard whenever desired.
The Animals and the… Evil Coconuts
Besides Moana and Maui, there’s also a lovable pig, a somewhat clumsy rooster, and a group of mischievous coconuts in the story.
Pua
Moana’s lovable pet pig, named Pua, steals the hearts of viewers and leaves an indelible impression without a voice actor. In the initial Moana movie, Pua was hesitant to embark on the main journey, but he has shown more courage in the three years since then.
Heihei
Heihei, a rather dimwitted rooster, found himself embarking on Moana’s initial voyage, not by design but due to circumstances beyond his control. Swimming wasn’t exactly something chickens like him were equipped for, so it’s safe to say he wouldn’t have chosen this adventure if given the option. Regardless, he managed to make it through the journey and will be joining her again in the sequel. Heihei is voiced by Alan Tudyk, a talented actor who is currently starring in ‘Resident Alien’. Interestingly, Heihei might just be one of the quirkiest roles Tudyk has taken on yet.
Kakamora
The Kakamora are a band of coconut-constructed pirates, as described by Moana in the initial movie. Despite their adorable appearance, she cautions that they can be lethal. In the first movie, they attempted to seize the heart of Te Fiti from Moana, but fortunately for her, they were unsuccessful. However, in the upcoming sequel, “Moana 2”, they continue to pose a threat to both Moana and Maui, displaying their mischievous nature once more.
Moana’s Family
In the initial film and its follow-up, Moana’s family may not have a significant spotlight, but they remain crucial characters. In this upcoming movie, though Moana’s younger sister Simea is introduced as a fresh face, her father, Chief Tua, mother, Sina, and paternal grandmother, Gramma Tala, are set to reprise their roles once more.
Chief Tua and Sina
In the animated movie Moana, Chief Tua serves as the head of Moana’s island, with Moana being his firstborn. He is preparing her to succeed him, but is reluctant to entertain the idea of leaving their home island. This reluctance stems from a tragic event, where he and his best friend had tried to sail beyond the protective reef, only for the treacherous waters to claim the life of his friend. Moana’s mother, Sina, shares this story with Moana, explaining her father’s fear of venturing beyond the safety of their island. Despite his apprehensions, Sina secretly helps Moana prepare and sets her on her journey. When Moana eventually returns, both Chief Tua and Sina are overjoyed, and they allow her to lead their people on a larger sea voyage across the ocean.
Moving forward, Temuera Morrison and Nicole Scherzinger will reprise their roles as Chief Tua and Sina, and it is expected that they will continue to have an influential presence in the life of their daughter.
Gramma Tala
In the initial movie, it was Gramma Tala who imparted all the forbidden wisdom to Moana. She was the one who encouraged her granddaughter to explore and learn that their ancestors were once travelers. Instead of staying put as Moana’s health deteriorated, she urged her to embark on a quest to find Maui. Additionally, Gramma Tala was the spirit that appeared to Moana during crucial moments. Although Gramma Tala, portrayed by Rachel House in both the original film and its sequel, passed away in the first movie, it’s expected that she will reappear when Moana requires her guidance the most in Moana 2.
Moana 2 hits theaters November 27th.
