As a die-hard comic book fan and longtime Marvel enthusiast, I must say that the upcoming X-Men film is one of the most highly anticipated projects in my lifetime. With a career spanning decades, from flipping through the pages of Uncanny X-Men as a kid to writing about the latest Marvel news today, I’ve seen the mutant team evolve and grow into an essential part of the Marvel Universe.
The long-awaited Marvel film featuring the X-Men has finally arrived, as the rights to this iconic team were previously held by 20th Century Fox. Due to this ownership, despite being a significant financial asset for Marvel, the X-Men couldn’t fully collaborate with Kevin Feige’s vision for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The initial mutant-focused projects from Fox began in 2000 with Bryan Singer’s X-Men, which boasted an impressive cast led by Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, and Ian McKellen as Magneto.
Since Disney bought 20th Century Fox in 2019, it opened up the opportunity for a fresh start for the X-Men within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). With their extensive comic book history and numerous films, including animated series, the X-Men have built a dedicated fanbase. Although discussions about incorporating them into the MCU started at the end of 2020, and they’ve made occasional appearances in Marvel movies, progress on a standalone feature film has been gradual. However, recent updates about the project are becoming more frequent, and the creative team responsible for it is now being assembled.
What Is the MCU ‘X-Men’ Movie About?
Details about the specific storyline for the upcoming Marvel’s X-Men movie are being kept confidential and tightly guarded. As of now, no trailer has been unveiled for the film. The way Marvel decides to introduce the X-Men is yet to be revealed, and there are numerous paths the movie could take. One possibility is using the multiverse concept to bring characters from various universes into the same timeframe.
It’s anticipated that Monica Rambeau, Beast, and an unnamed Professor X being stranded in another reality might serve as the starting point for the introduction of the X-Men into the Marvel universe, according to Screen Rant. This implies that these characters have already existed in this specific universe prior to their initial appearance.
The hunt for screenwriters for the MCU’s X-Men movie didn’t start until late 2023, following the SAG-AFTRA strikes. So, while we have ideas about the storyline, they are merely speculations. After a lengthy search, Marvel chose Michael Lesslie to write the script. Known for penning The Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Lesslie has demonstrated an ability to introduce new characters and maintain their ties to previous ones. With its expansive scope, X-Men might be a more complex project than the prequel, but we’ll have to wait and see how Lesslie shapes the film in the coming months.
Who Are the MCU ‘X-Men’ Characters?
As I write this, there hasn’t been a final decision regarding the cast for Marvel’s X-Men movie. Nevertheless, industry insider Daniel RPK has hinted that the MCU’s X-Men might resemble the team from the ’97 X-Men animated series. Unfortunately, the suggestion doesn’t provide any specific names about who might or might not be part of the cast. Since the reboot is planning to introduce a new set of X-Men following the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga with the 2027 Avengers film, if they decide to move in this direction, it would probably mean an entirely new group of actors stepping into these iconic roles.
In the upcoming projects, fresh characters will make their appearance, but you might recognize some familiar faces from the X-Men, who have occasionally popped up in previous MCU productions. For instance, the Ms. Marvel series hinted at mutants existing within the MCU. Additionally, characters like Namor, Professor X, and Beast have had cameos throughout the MCU. Deadpool and Wolverine, originally from Fox productions, also appeared in the MCU, although they didn’t stick around permanently by the end of their films. The upcoming movie will need to find a way to seamlessly integrate itself with the existing X-Men storylines within the MCU.
In an interview with io9 in July 2024, Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, shared insights about the process Marvel plans to use for selecting which mutants will join the team and subsequently appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). According to Feige:
“We frequently use this phrase at Marvel – ‘It’s an abundance of quality’. There are plenty of amazing X-Men characters featured in the Deadpool & Wolverine movie. The Fox versions of the X-Men films have many great X-Men characters too. Plus, there are tons of fantastic X-Men characters who haven’t appeared on the big screen yet. Just like how we brought back familiar Spider-Man characters and introduced new ones when we made a deal with Sony, I think you’ll see a blend of old favorites and fresh faces in the X-Men films going forward.
When Will Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ Be Released?
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s X-Men project is just getting started. The creative minds are being assembled, giving us fans confidence that things are moving full steam ahead. It’s been hinted that filming might kick off towards the end of 2025. This means we might get to witness this epic production on the big screen around 2027, following the climax of Avengers: Secret Wars. In fact, Kevin Feige himself has hinted that Secret Wars will pave the way for a new era of mutants and X-Men.
It seems ideal for the X-Men to join the MCU during the climax of the Multiverse Saga, which is expected with the release of “Avengers: Secret Wars” in 2021. This introduction of the X-Men marks a fresh start for Marvel, offering novel characters and storylines that could prove profitable. Concurrently, the arrival of the X-Men will provide fans with exciting new narratives to anticipate. However, it’s important to mention that as of now, there has been no official announcement regarding an “X-Men” film in Marvel’s upcoming Phase Six lineup.
