As a long-time fan of Tom Cruise and his action-packed films, I must say that the prospect of him venturing into the horror genre with Doug Liman is nothing short of exhilarating! With his extensive experience in high-octane stunts and intense performances, it’s easy to imagine him tackling a terrifying supernatural threat lurking deep within an otherworldly underwater trench.
On December 2, 2024, filmmaker Doug Liman disclosed intentions to collaborate once more with actor Tom Cruise on a chilling supernatural thriller titled “Deeper”. This news was shared with 411Showbiz (via Deadline) at the screening of his documentary “Gaucho, Gaucho”, where Liman provided some insights into the forthcoming movie that promises to be frightening. Notably, Tom Cruise has yet to star in an outright horror film, so this project marks a fresh departure for him in his acting career.
Liman and Cruise collaborated on the 2014 science fiction-thriller “Edge of Tomorrow,” and have since talked about teaming up again. Fortunately, the talented actor-director has chosen a project involving Tom Cruise delving into the ocean’s depths. Although the supernatural thriller “Deeper” is still in its early stages, here are all the essential details known about it so far.
Deeper’s Premise, Explained
At a New York screening for his latest documentary titled “Gaucho Gaucho”, director Doug Liman hinted to Roger Friedman of 411Showbiz that he plans to collaborate with actor Tom Cruise again. This reunion is expected following their successful partnership on the sci-fi action film “Edge of Tomorrow” in 2014 and the less recognized drug cartel movie “American Made” in 2017. Liman piqued interest by mentioning that he is eager to create a thrilling, perhaps even frightening movie at this stage in his career. He stated, “I’ve never made one before, and neither has Tom.
As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve always been intrigued by the debate surrounding the chilling factor of Anne Rice’s adaptation of Interview with the Vampire. However, it’s no secret that Tom Cruise has seldom graced our screens in an authentic horror production. In 2015, he took on the lead role in The Mummy, a lackluster attempt at rejuvenating Universal’s classic Monster Movies that fell flat when it came to scaring us senseless. So, when director Doug Liman expresses his anticipation for Cruise exploring a genre he’s yet to venture into in his 40-year acting career, I can’t help but share that same excitement with fellow movie lovers.
According to Deadline, Deeper’s premise reads:
In this rephrased version, the story revolves around an astronaut venturing into an unexplored abyssal trench, where they face a truly frightening entity during their submersible journey.
Since 2016, this script has been circulating, but it’s yet to be confirmed if Liman plans to direct “Deeper” next or if he’ll take on a different project first. The location of the uncharted trench is still unknown – it could be on Earth or somewhere far beyond our solar system. However, it’s generally agreed that this trench lies beneath the ocean, hinting at a potential underwater creature movie.
Script & Studio Details
Despite it being unclear if Liman will direct “Deeper” next, details about the script and its association with Warner Bros. have been disclosed. As reported by Deadline, “Deeer” is presently affiliated with Warner Bros., the studio that both produced and distributed Edge of Tomorrow for Cruise and Liman.
One of five films that Doug Liman is currently working on as director includes the sequel to “Edge of Tomorrow,” titled “Live Die Repeat and Repeat” (still in development), along with “Luna Park” (also in development), “Everest” (in production), and an unnamed project featuring Tom Cruise and SpaceX (pre-production). Previously, Liman directed the remake of “Road House” for Amazon MGM’s Studios and the buddy-heist film “The Instigators” for Apple.

It’s worth mentioning that “Deeper” and the “Tom Cruise/SpaceX Project without a Title” are separate endeavors. While Tom Cruise portrays an astronaut in “Deeper,” it can be confusing to think they are one and the same. The SpaceX project, on the other hand, will be filmed in outer space with assistance from NASA and SpaceX, with the majority of the action taking place on the International Space Station (ISS).
Regarding “Deeper”, it is worth mentioning that the original screenplay was penned by Max Landis, who happens to be the son of renowned filmmaker John Landis. Since 2016, this script has been circulating in Hollywood and has undergone multiple revisions before eventually ending up with director Doug Liman.
Deeper’s Time in Production Hell
Over a decade ago, Max Landis’ captivating screenplay came close to being produced by MGM with Bradley Cooper as the main character, under the direction of Hungarian filmmaker Kornel Mundruczo (known for ‘Jupiter’s Moon’ and ‘Pieces of a Woman’). However, when the movie failed to materialize, Baltasar Kormakur (famous for ‘Everest’ and ‘2 Guns’) attempted to revive the chilling supernatural thriller with Idris Elba as the lead actor. Unfortunately, this project didn’t take off either, leading Elba and Kormakur to work together on the 2022 movie ‘Beast’, a film about a dangerous tiger instead.
As for the upcoming projects on Cruise’s horizon, there are six in different phases of production. These include “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”, a WWII drama titled “Broadsword”, the mob drama under witness protection named “The Gauntlet”, an unnamed film by Alejandro G. Inarritu, and both the previously mentioned SpaceX project and “Live Die Repeat and Repeat”. Additionally, Cruise has shown interest in creating a follow-up to his 1990 NASCAR movie, “Days of Thunder”, which is currently in talks with Paramount Pictures.

Looking forward to many more revelations in the upcoming months, Tom Cruise and Doug Liman’s fans are eagerly anticipating their foray into horror filmmaking. Although the astronaut setting gives the movie a sci-fi vibe, Deeper is shaping up to be a chilling supernatural mystery centered around a “dreadful entity” lurking within an eerie underwater abyss.
