The newest creation from the Nintendo family, known as Nintendo Virtual Play Cards, were unveiled in the March 2025 Nintendo Direct presentation.
The upcoming enhancement for Nintendo Switch’s existing features is set to arrive shortly, promising to revolutionize the way gamers exchange games for all time.
This guide will explain everything you need to know about Nintendo Virtual Game Cards.
What Are Nintendo Virtual Game Cards?
Nintendo Virtual Play Cards represent a fresh method for gamers to exchange their video games with peers. Essentially, this innovation aims to make the digital versions of Nintendo games just as adaptable and hassle-free as traditional game cards.
On two Nintendo consoles, you can interchangeably use the same Virtual Cards just as if you were swapping traditional game cartridges. To do this, simply connect both systems through local communication, and you’re all set!
Exchanging Nintendo Virtual Cards among friends and relatives can be done by adding them to your family group. It’s important to note that a maximum of eight individuals can be included in a single family group.
How Do Nintendo Virtual Game Cards Work?

Whenever I buy a digital game from the Nintendo eShop, it gets downloaded onto my console as a personalized Nintendo Digital Game Card. This way, not only can I enjoy the game, but anyone else who’s registered on my console can also join in the fun!
On the designated Nintendo Virtual Console interface, you have the ability to insert and remove any of your digital games, allowing you to decide which digital games are accessible on your device at any given moment.
On another Nintendo Switch console, it’s possible to install Virtual Game Cards as well. To achieve this, simply remove the game from the initial console via its management screen, log into the second console with your account, then load the game for play.
Being signed in and online is required when ejecting and loading each game.
If you link up with a relative using local Wi-Fi, you can lend your Nintendo Virtual Playing Cards to them for as long as two weeks. Simply pick a game to borrow and opt for lending to a family member. Once they download the game, they’ll be able to enjoy it on their own system.
When borrowing games, each family member can only have one game out at a given time. After 14 days, the game will be automatically returned to your console, preserving the save data for the individual who took it.
