Evil Dead Rise is Coming to Netflix, and Bruce Campbell Has Some Advice for Viewers

As a cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, let me tell you that “Evil Dead Rise” is not for the faint-hearted or the easily startled. Having grown up on the original trilogy and the TV series, I can confidently say that this latest addition to the franchise is a thrilling ride that stays true to its roots while also offering something fresh and terrifying.

In September, the newest installment of the “Evil Dead” saga, titled “Evil Dead Rise“, is set to premiere on Netflix. The long-time franchise actor, Bruce Campbell, has some words of wisdom for those who haven’t caught up with this chilling sequel yet. Released in 2023, the film offered a modern twist to the demonic horror series that Sam Raimi initiated in the ’80s. The success of the movie has given rise to two new projects within the franchise that are currently under development.

Via X/Twitter, Campbell cautioned his followers about the release of “Evil Dead Rise” on Netflix by sharing this recommendation: “Keep your kids out of sight. I’m not kidding.” Known for bringing Ash Williams, the primary character of the series, to life in the initial three “Evil Dead” movies and the television show “Ash vs Evil Dead”, Campbell has also been involved as a producer in the newer films. He appears to be set to continue this role in future productions.

In a departure from the typical “cabin in the woods” tale, Evil Dead Rise, a standalone sequel, gained widespread acclaim and proved to be commercially successful, earning $147 million against a production budget of $19 million. Following Fede Álvarez’s remake/reboot of Evil Dead in 2013, many anticipated a direct continuation of the original storyline. However, Lee Cronin surprised audiences by shifting the setting from the familiar woods to the unfamiliar urban landscape of Los Angeles.

In the movie “Evil Dead Rise“, Beth travels to see her sister Ellie after learning she’s expecting a child. Ellie, a solitary mom, resides in a run-down apartment complex in Los Angeles with her trio of kids. An earthquake uncovers a hidden floor beneath the parking lot, and the children discover an ancient record containing religious incantations there. Unwittingly, they awaken a malevolent spirit that initially targets Ellie before attempting to possess every resident in the building.

The movie titled “Evil Dead Rise” features actresses Lily Sullivan, Alyssa Sutherland, Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols, Richard Crouchley, Noah Paul and Nell Fisher. This film was both written and directed by Lee Cronin, who had previously made a name for himself in the horror genre with his independent film “The Hole in the Ground“, which gained him recognition and the opportunity to work on the recent “Evil Dead” production.

What’s in the Future for the Evil Dead Franchise?

Following the highly successful “Evil Dead Rise”, discussions about a possible sequel became unavoidable. Producers Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell recognized that the franchise still had life left in it, and they envisioned reviving it with fresh and intriguing characters. However, the most crucial aspect was finding a new setting to keep things interesting. If the idea worked once for contemporary audiences, why not completely reinvent it as well? Campbell has expressed his reluctance to reprise the Ash character after “Ash vs Evil Dead”, but he may change his mind if Raimi were to direct again.

Despite the fact that Ash Williams is no longer involved, upcoming sequels for the Evil Dead franchise are being developed by filmmakers Sébastien Vaniček (Infested) and Francis Galluppi (The Last Stop in Yuma County). These new interpretations of the franchise have the backing of original director Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell. Robert Tapert, a long-time associate who has been involved with the franchise since its inception, is also contributing to these fresh projects.

The horror movie “Evil Dead Rise” will start streaming on Netflix from September 23rd. However, if you can’t wait that long, you can already watch it on Max.
