Evil Dead Rise Quickly Cracks Netflix Top 10

As a cinephile with over three decades under my belt, I must say that my heart skipped a beat when I heard about the latest addition to the Evil Dead franchise. Having grown up with Bruce Campbell’s iconic portrayal of Ash Williams, watching him battle against the Deadites and their evil minions became an integral part of my formative years.

In a distinctive style reminiscent of Ash Williams, Bruce Campbell’s iconic character, it’s quite “swell” to see how quickly “Evil Dead Rise” has been shooting up the Netflix Top 10 list. Released on Monday, September 23, this 2023 horror movie by director Lee Cronin is already sitting pretty at the No. 2 spot on Netflix just two days later (as reported by Tudum). With Halloween approaching, it’s expected that the latest “Evil Dead” film will continue to gain momentum as we head towards All Hallows’ Eve.

It’s no wonder that the movie Evil Dead Rise is doing well on Netflix, given its popularity. Despite Ash (Campbell) not having a significant role in this installment, fans are still drawn to the Necronomicon. The film received a “B” CinemaScore from moviegoers leaving theaters, which is an impressive rating for a horror movie. Additionally, Evil Dead Rise boasts a 76% Popcornmeter rating (previously known as the Rotten Tomatoes audience score), based on over 2,500 verified ratings. It’s worth noting that even critics seem to have enjoyed Cronin’s interpretation of the Evil Dead.

The film titled “Evil Dead Rise” has an impressive 84% rating on the Tomatometer, which may not be surprising given its abundance of gruesome gore and nerve-wracking frights. Generally speaking, films from this series have been favorably received by critics, with only a few exceptions like the 2013 remake. Interestingly, the STARZ series “Ash vs Evil Dead” almost achieved a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. At the moment of writing, the show starring Bruce Campbell is sitting at an impressive 99% on the Tomatometer and a 95% rating on the Popcornmeter.

Evil Dead Rise also proved to be a hit at the cinema, raking in an impressive $67.4 million within the U.S., surpassing its production budget of $19 million. However, it truly excelled overseas, adding another $78.8 million to its earnings for a global total of $146.1 million (as reported by The Numbers), with Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland leading the cast.

Approximately a month ago, it was announced that “Evil Dead Rise” would be releasing on Netflix in September. Not long after, Bruce Campbell, the beloved actor known for his role as Ash Williams with the chainsaw, took to social media to alert fans of this upcoming streaming release. On X, which is now Twitter, he posted:

Hide the children. Seriously.

In “Evil Dead Rise,” Campbell’s voice was heard for a short while, but he chose to focus on the project as an executive producer instead of reprising his role as Ash Williams. The new “Evil Dead” installment maintained a darker yet delightful tone. Aside from his involvement in this horror series, Campbell has been actively celebrating another iconic role – that of an aging Elvis Presley – on social media recently.

Indeed, it’s been 21 years since “Bubba Ho-Tep” was released, but the enthusiasm among Evil Dead fans is undeniable; they’d jump at the chance to see Bruce Campbell reprise his role as the sharp-witted Ash, rather than the romantic hero he often portrays on screen. However, for now, Ash’s iconic boomstick, the Book of the Dead, and those Deadite-summoning records have been handed over to Beth (Sullivan) for safekeeping.
