EXCLUSIVE: Daggubati Suresh Babu discusses impact of rising ticket prices and benefits of box office clashes in South cinema for film's success

As a lifestyle expert with a keen interest in cinema and its impact on society, I wholeheartedly agree with Daggubati Suresh Babu‘s perspective on the rising price of film tickets in Indian theaters. Having spent years in the industry, I can attest to the fact that while high ticket prices may seem beneficial for big film players, it unfortunately creates a barrier for many common moviegoers who are unable to afford these inflated costs.

Recently, renowned film producer and exhibitor Daggubati Suresh Babu shared his views in an exclusive interview with TopMob regarding the increasing costs of movie tickets in Indian cinemas.

In reaction to the same, Suresh Babu said, “See, the better town who are maintaining the pricing control today is Tamil Nadu. They’ve kept the ticket prices to an upper limit of Rs 190. In Telugu, we have a pricing barrier regularly but the government is allowing us to increase prices for star films.”

“Is this beneficial or detrimental…since major movie studios favor it as their only perceived escape route during hard times. However, considering different perspectives, does it have overall positive implications? If tickets are priced at Rs 500 or Rs 100, will an average person still go to the cinema for the rest of the month given they’ve already seen their quota of films?” He continued by saying this.

In addition to what Suresh Babu stated, he expressed his personal viewpoint that prices should be reasonable to avoid making the cinema-going experience too expensive for people. He questioned if the experience was still worthwhile given the cost or if one feels overcharged. If so, they might consider it as a special event or festival, while for regular viewing, they would opt for streaming platforms like OTT.

In simpler terms, the movie maker continued by discussing how increased ticket costs are limiting the number of people who can go to the movies. Now, they mainly attract a specific, smaller group of viewers.

During the same discussion, Suresh Babu elaborated on the advantages of simultaneous movie releases, stating that such occurrences spark greater interest among people, making cinema a popular topic for conversations at home.

During Pongal festivals, Ajith is squaring off against Vijay, along with NTR, Balakrishna, and Venkatesh. This theater is open, but others aren’t. As a result, everyone’s focus is on movies, making it big news. It’s crucial to stay in people’s thoughts. If you can make films the main topic of discussion, then that’s excellent.
