EXCLUSIVE: Gadar 2 director Anil Sharma reacts to rising entourage cost debate; ‘Agar 12 log chaiye toh, aap apne paison se…’

As a seasoned filmmaker who has weathered the highs and lows of the Bollywood industry for decades, I wholeheartedly agree with Anil Sharma’s perspective on the rising entourage costs debate. Having witnessed the evolution of cinema and the market dynamics, it is evident that the audience today seeks quality content over star power.

Film director Anil Sharma, a seasoned professional in the industry, is currently basking in the one-year anniversary triumph of Gadar 2. In a recent interview with TopMob, he shared his thoughts on the escalating debate about entourage costs. He argued that such expenses could be redirected towards film production instead.

Recently, during an interaction with News 18, actor Manoj Bajpayee described escalating entourage expenses as a two-sided issue. He pointed out that movies are produced based on a star’s popularity value, and it’s unrealistic to expect them to reduce their fees since they bring certain advantages along with them.

In response to this, Anil Sharma was quick to say, “Kahan mil raha hai? kisko mil raha hai? 2-2 crore ki opening ho rahi hai bade bade staron ki. Kisko mil raha hai? Face value pe aadha bhi nai aa rahi, picture mein content hai koi, vo picture chal rahi hai(Who is getting such openings? Even big stars are getting an opening of Rs. 2 crores. Nobody is coming on face value. Only a content driven film is working).”

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but delve deeper into this fascinating topic. You know, last year’s blockbusters? The ones that raked in anywhere from 250 million to 400 million rupees at the box office? Well, here’s a mind-blowing fact: it’s the entourage fees of these stars that eat up a significant portion of those earnings!

He suggested that instead of putting pressure on the producer, focus on what will appear on the screen itself (since that’s their primary concern). Additionally, he noted that it is the producer’s role to take care of the essential needs of the actors in the film.

He emphasizes, “Why do you require exactly twelve individuals? If you desire twelve people, then it’s your responsibility to bring them along, financially speaking… Nobody attends movies just for someone else’s fame, yet you seem to want everything. Apart from the main four to five or at most six actors, no one truly deserves a spot or has the ability to significantly impact box-office success with their name.”
