Exclusive Interview: Sai Pallavi opens up on difference between Bollywood and South film industry; says ‘there’s a lot of room for improvisation’

As someone who has spent years immersed in the vibrant world of South Indian cinema, I can wholeheartedly affirm that Sai Pallavi’s insights into the differences between our region and Bollywood are spot on. The room for improvisation, the treatment of assistants, and the pay disparities she mentioned are all issues I have observed during my journey in this field.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m thrilled to share that the captivating film Amaran, inspired by the life of Major Mukund Varadarajan, has been receiving outstanding responses since its premiere on October 31. The movie’s triumphant run has led us to an engaging discussion at the TopMob Masterclass, where stars like Sivakarthikeyan, Sai Pallavi, Rahul Bose, and director Rajkumar Periasamy joined us for a lively exchange of thoughts.

In the course of an interview, a Ramayan actress engaged with one of her admirers and expounded upon the distinctions between Southern and Hindi movies. Sai Pallavi highlighted that there’s more scope for creativity and spontaneity in South Indian films than in Hindi cinema.

She mentioned that while pre-production and shooting require a great deal of precision here (in Bollywood), there’s more flexibility south of here, allowing for improvisation. She sometimes feels everything is too perfect in Bollywood, fearing change if she were to improvise. In summary, she finds the differences intriguing but fundamentally, they are similar.

Sai Pallavi emphasized another significant disparity between the two film industries. Speaking about her experience in the Tamil film industry, she pointed out, “Here, we have assistant directors who often don’t earn as much as their counterparts in Bollywood. This is why you might notice that assistant directors here tend to stick around and work on multiple projects because they feel secure in their roles.

In the southern regions, it’s unclear if they receive or are compensated fairly for their worth. It can be disheartening to see talented individuals work tirelessly yet not receive fair compensation. This is another disparity I’ve observed, Sai Pallavi pointed out.

For those not in the know, actress Sai Pallavi is set to act alongside Ranbir Kapoor for the very first time in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming film adaptation of Ramayana. The production team has revealed that this movie will be presented in two parts, with the initial segment slated to premiere in cinemas in 2026, and the second part scheduled for release in 2027.
