As a die-hard fan of Rani Mukerji and her electrifying portrayal of Shivani Shivaji Roy in the Mardaani franchise, I can barely contain my excitement as we gear up for the next chapter! It’s not often that we witness a female-led film franchise in Indian cinema, let alone one that packs such a powerful punch.
In 2014, actress Rani Mukerji collaborated with YRF on a movie titled “Mardaani,” where she portrayed the character Shivani Shivaji Roy. This film turned out to be a surprise success, and five years later, in 2019, Mukerji and YRF joined forces again for “Mardaani 2.” The two films have established the Mardaani franchise as one of the unique female-led franchises in Indian Cinema. Five years after the second installment, Rani is ready to reprise her role as Shivani Shivaji Roy in the next chapter of Mardaani.
Based on information from reliable sources involved in the production process, it appears that actress Rani Mukerji will begin filming for the next installment of the “Mardaani” series as early as the first quarter of 2025. A source close to the development shared, “For Rani Mukerji and Aditya Chopra, ‘Mardaani’ is a cherished franchise. They have been refining a script with their internal team of writers for some time now, and they recently approved an idea that honors the legacy of parts one and two. The writing team is currently polishing the screenplay before the project transitions into pre-production.”
As in the previous films, it’s expected that a significant aspect of this new film will be the portrayal of antagonism, enhancing the impact and strength of both the narrative and the protagonist, played by Tahir Raj Bhasin in Mardaani or Vishal Jethwa in Mardaan 2. Notably, the franchise is recognized for its formidable villains. In the upcoming installment, the producers will be introducing a strong character to face off against Rani Mukerji.
Rani is eager to slip back into the action role once more. The character of Shivani Shivaji Roy appeals to her because it’s powerful and empowering. It’s unusual for a female lead to headline a franchise in India, but Rani is doing just that with Mardaani. According to the source, this film will be released in theaters, as Rani remains dedicated to appearing only on the big screen. Interestingly, YRF also suggested a possible sequel to Mardaani in a teaser celebrating the 10th anniversary of the first part.
