In six months, Scott Derrickson’s “The Black Phone 2″ will hit the screens, and for those curious about Ethan Hawke’s character The Grabber’s role, the wait is now over. Remember, at the end of the first movie, Finney (Mason Thames) killed the villainous child killer. Given this ending, many were puzzled about the direction the sequel would take. However, it seems like it’s borrowing some elements from another famous horror series – “A Nightmare on Elm Street”.
Although the official trailer for “The Black Phone 2” hasn’t been publicly released yet, Discussing Film attended CinemaCon to offer fans a detailed description. They reported that the trailer starts with a chilling rendition of Alice in Chains’ “The Rooster.” Ethan Finney is shown leading a bleak life, while his sister, Gwen (played by Madeleine McGraw), experiences similar eerie visions as before. It appears that The Grabber’s spirit still has an influence over them, causing more torment from beyond the grave in both their dreams and visions, much like Freddy Krueger’s relentless pursuit of the Elm Street kids in Wes Craven’s iconic film series. The trailer also includes quick glimpses of a black phone ringing, and according to the outlet, the remaining footage is truly terrifying.
In this scene, The Grabber is seen gracefully gliding towards the camera in slow motion on ice skates. It seems that there’s a unique bond between The Grabber and Gwen, as if he can reach out to her from another realm, swiftly spinning her around repeatedly. As Finney watches this image on his phone, it becomes evident that this apparition is even more chilling than the original movie, with its intensified supernatural aspects making it all the more frightening.
Besides Hawke, Thames, and McGraw returning in their roles from the 2022 movie “The Black Phone”, Jeremy Davies is set to reappear as Terrence in its sequel. Additionally, Demián Bichir, known for his work in “The Hateful Eight” and “Godzilla vs. Kong”, has joined the cast, although details about his character in the upcoming film are yet to be revealed. Produced by Blumhouse, “The Black Phone 2” is scheduled to release in theaters on October 17, 2025.
Scott Derrickson Calls ‘The Black Phone 2’ a “High School Coming-Of-Age” Movie
As a dedicated cinephile looking back on three years since “The Black Phone” graced our screens, it’s become apparent that time marches on and none of us are immune to the passage of years. The young cast I had the pleasure of working with has undeniably grown up, leaving behind the halls of middle school for the challenges of high school. Consequently, if a sequel to “The Black Phone” were to materialize, it wouldn’t simply pick up where the first film left off. In an interview with Screen Rant this year, director Scott Derrickson shared his insights: “I recognized that after ‘The Black Phone,’ which was followed by ‘The Gorge,’ by the time I was prepared to begin filming another project, those kids would have moved on to high school.
In essence, this new movie is similar to a high school growth story, much like the original one was a middle school growth tale.
For fans of horror, it’s no secret that some of the genre’s most captivating stories involve children grappling with both supernatural perils and real-world challenges, like in films such as Stephen King’s “It”. Fingers crossed that “The Black Phone 2” will continue to captivate us. In the meantime, catch up on the original movie, currently streaming on Peacock.
