EXCLUSIVE: When Sriram Raghavan wrote his version of Baazigar only to learn that it was already being made, deets inside

1993 saw Baazigar become a turning point in Shah Rukh Khan’s career. In this movie, Kajol and Shilpa Shetty played pivotal roles, with Abbas-Mustan directing the film. Interestingly, at one point, renowned director Sriram Raghavan had also planned to create his own adaptation of the story. During a private conversation with TopMob, Raghavan shared that he had drafted a script based on a novel, only to discover later that it was already under production.

As a passionate follower, let me share how Sriram Raghavan expressed his experience during his Bollywood debut: “Wow, this is an outstanding tale, I must bring it to life,” the filmmaker reminisced, unaware that he would need to acquire the rights for it. He continued, “I was merely a man with a story, so I began writing and completed a draft of it.

In our conversation about Merry Christmas, the director confided that he discovered during their discussions that the movie was actually under production and he himself was part of the cast. Later on, he reminisced about seeing Baazigar at the cinema and discreetly observing the crowd’s delight as they watched it together.

When asked about potential changes in the film, Sriram Raghavan expressed that he would have made it more aligned with the original novel’s narrative. Raghavan explained that the story revolves around a psychopathic character who aims to amass a fortune of one million dollars and targets three women as part of his aspirations.

Apart from reminiscing about his encounters with Shah Rukh Khan and Abbas-Mustan, Raghavan shared the events that transpired. It’s worth noting that he presented his story to Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who felt that it lacked musical numbers. The filmmaker then remembered how VVC advised him to add more excitement to the project instead.

At present, Sriram Raghavan is engrossed in his forthcoming war drama titled Ikkis. This movie is an account of the life of Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, and it features Agastya Nanda, Dharmendra, and Jaideep Ahlawat as its main characters, along with others.
