As a long-time fan who’s clocked countless hours in the desolate wastelands of Fallout: New Vegas, the announcement that Season 2 is heading to this iconic location feels like hitting the jackpot at Gomorrah. The leaked set photos have only fueled my excitement, with the Royal Hawaiian Motel and the town’s welcome sign promising an authentic experience that harkens back to the beloved game.
Get that big iron on your hip, because Fallout Season 2 is heading to New Vegas. Fans already knew the show’s sophomore season was heading to the Strip when it was teased in the Season 1 finale. But, we’ve just got our first look at New Vegas, thanks to some leaked set photos. The Mojave Desert is the main setting of the beloved video game, Fallout: New Vegas (which is commonly regarded as the best in the franchise). Prime Video’s Fallout series is set years after the events of New Vegas, and the first set photos show off an iconic location the Courier would have stopped off in.
The images were posted on X (previously known as Twitter) by @FilmsFallout. These pictures showcased the town of Novac, a significant spot in the game, and they included the Royal Hawaiian Motel and another unspecified structure, along with the famous town sign. A nuclear-powered vehicle was parked in front of the motel, and there was also a Nuka Cola machine (similar to Coca-Cola in the Fallout universe). The damaged welcome sign read “No Vac,” which is where the town derives its name.
The stage was constructed in Bakersfield, California, a humorous nod to the game. In Novac, there stands a massive dinosaur holding the “World’s Second-Largest Thermometer,” mirroring the real-life largest thermometer in Bakersfield. This subtle touch suggests that the creators of Fallout are avid fans of the games. Unfortunately, as of now, we haven’t seen the giant dinosaur make an appearance. However, given the series’ propensity for embracing the game’s absurdity on Prime Video, it’s likely that this dinosaur will be incorporated into the show.
Is Going to New Vegas a Good Idea for ‘Fallout?’
Most folks who’ve visited Las Vegas have likely engaged in actions they later regretted, such as overindulging, attempting to swim in the Bellagio Fountains, or wagering everything on red. However, a different kind of remorse might be in store for those planning a trip to New Vegas, as depicted in Prime Video’s series. This series is set within the same universe as the video games, but follows events after all the installments. Unlike the Fallout games, which are Role-Playing Games (RPGs) that allow players to shape the story and determine the victorious factions, this TV show will have a fixed ending for Fallout: New Vegas, a decision made by showrunners Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet.
In the closing scene of Fallout Season 1, Hank McLean (played by Kyle MacLachlan) and his companions, Lucy (Ella Purnell) and The Ghoul (Walton Goggins), were seen heading towards the Mojave Desert, suggesting a potential focus on New Vegas in Season 2. While the exact amount of time spent there remains uncertain, smaller locations like Novac could indicate that New Vegas will be a central setting. In Fallout: New Vegas, players are tasked with choosing which faction controls the Hoover Dam, thereby powering The Strip, and eliminating rival factions. By the time of Prime Video’s show, these events would have already transpired. The creators, Wagner and Robertson-Dworet, will likely align themselves with the NCR, Caesar’s Legion, enigmatic Mr. House (who made a brief appearance in Season 1), or one of the smaller gangs.
