Fallout's Walter Goggins Explains Why HIs Emmy-Nominated Role as The Ghoul Was His Most Difficult

As a movie enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of some truly remarkable performances, I must say that Walton Goggins’ portrayal of The Ghoul and Cooper Howard in Fallout has left me utterly spellbound. With his extensive background in both film and television, he has consistently demonstrated an uncanny ability to embody complex characters with a depth that resonates deeply.

The captivating television series, Fallout, has become one of the standout shows this year, with its powerful character-driven storyline set in a post-apocalyptic world. As the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards draw near, the program has amassed an impressive 16 nominations, including nods for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor (Walton Goggins). Beyond the awards, his performance has earned widespread acclaim from both fans and critics.

Walton Goggins has built a fabulous resume over the years, playing both heroes and villains across film and television. From his chilling portrayal of Boyd Crowder in Justified to the terrifying Lee Russell in Vice Principals, he has consistently showcased a flair for taking on the most cunning and layered roles. In Fallout, he takes on the daunting task of portraying not one but two characters – The Ghoul and Cooper Howard. When asked by Collider to pick a role from his illustrious career, one that challenged him as an actor, Goggins confirmed it is indeed The Ghoul from Fallout.

If someone pointed a gun at me and asked me to choose, I’d likely pick Fallout as the most challenging project due to several reasons. Firstly, the complexities surrounding the prosthetics used in the production were quite daunting because we weren’t sure what would emerge from them. Secondly, the discomfort caused by all the equipment we had to wear was a constant struggle. Add to that the unpredictable weather and temperature conditions, and the fact that I wasn’t familiar with this world or how to navigate it at the start, made Fallout a real challenge for me.

It’s worth noting that Goggins, despite being cast in the role, had never played the Fallout games himself and didn’t feel inclined to explore them afterwards. Yet, this lack of prior experience only added to the awe-inspiring quality of his performance, making his Emmy nomination truly merited.

Since I’ve never played the game, I chose not to participate because I didn’t want any influences from the various depictions of The Ghoul in those games affecting my experience.

In the game Fallout, Goggins delves deep into the minds of two characters: The Ghoul and Cooper Howard. The Ghoul is a pitiful soul marred by radiation and the remnants of a harsh world. His tale revolves around survival, yet he’s abandoned any hope for compassion in favor of a life filled with gunfights and bounty hunting. On the other hand, Cooper Howard was a character from before the apocalypse. A renowned Hollywood actor and representative of Vault-Tec, he carried an air of polish and strict morals, and valued the protection of his family above all else.

In a skillful manner, Goggins portrays the complexity of his characters, showcasing his acting talent. The character of The Ghoul presents a challenging role due to its intense and sorrowful journey. This character wrestles not only with losing his humanity but also confronts tangible hardships. His partnership with Lucy provides an opportunity for redemption, yet the outcome remains uncertain, even to Goggins himself, as he eagerly awaits discovering it.

After getting nominated for an Emmy for his demanding role, Goggins promptly shared his joy and appreciation. He recognized being in the company of the industry’s finest, and he didn’t forget to acknowledge the diligent efforts put forth by the whole Fallout crew as well.

Being part of this group alongside my idols such as Gary Oldman, some of whom are old friends, and being surrounded by such talented storytellers is like hitting the jackpot for me. I feel like we’ve all already triumphed, just by being here. As an artist, making a living is like winning the lottery to me, and I’m simply grateful for this invitation to the gathering.

Walton Goggins is up against Donald Glover, Idris Elba, Gary Oldman, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Dominic West in the nominations for their respective roles in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Hijack, Slow Horses, Shogun, and The Crown.
