As a gamer with a deep appreciation for cinema and a keen eye for political undercurrents, I found myself utterly captivated by the trailer for Mohammad Rasoulof’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig. This film, shot entirely in secret amidst Iranian oppression, resonates deeply with my own experiences of navigating complex narratives and hidden truths in video games.
As a passionate viewer, I eagerly watched the trailer this week for the gripping thriller by Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof titled “The Seed of the Sacred Fig“. This intense drama portrays a family living under oppressive conditions in Iran.
In secret production, a groundbreaking Iranian film has been made by a rebellious filmmaker who later won the Special Jury Prize at Cannes. The trailer focuses on a family that finds themselves under scrutiny when their father, Iman (played by Misagh Zare), is appointed as an investigative judge in Tehran. As political tension escalates and protests fill the streets, Iman begins to perceive his job as more perilous than initially thought, leading him to harbor suspicion towards even his devout wife Najmeh and their teenage daughters Sana and Rezvan.
At one point in the trailer, a soft-spoken Imam questions, “What misfortune befalls me now?” This scene is accompanied by car pursuits, repeated knocks on their front door, and a readied firearm for defense against a potential break-in.
As a fervent admirer, I found that the chilling elements in The Seed of the Sacred Fig mirror Amin’s harrowing struggle within an unjust Iranian judicial system. Reminders of the genuine youth protest movement from late 2022, ignited by the tragic demise of Mahsa Amini, who was detained for defying the hijab law, seemed to reverberate throughout the movie’s narrative.
In just weeks before his film premiered in competition at Cannes, Rasoulof had to leave Iran due to an eight-year prison sentence. Later, Germany chose The Seed of the Sacred Fig to represent them at the 2025 Oscars in the best international feature category because Rasoulof now resides in Berlin as a German resident.
In November 2024, Neon intends to have a restricted cinema debut for the film titled “The Seed of the Sacred Fig“. This movie also features notable performances by Soheila Golestani, Mahsa Rostami, Setareh Maleki, Niousha Akhshi, Reza Akhlaghi, Shiva Ordooei, and Amineh Arani.
